I realise every flight is different, but just wondering if anyone has ever had any luck using AA 500 mile upgrades?

I'm AA Plat.

Cheers

I don't have personal experience, but my wife is PLT and all of her upgrade requests have cleared (including where she was travelling with a companion).

I have 36 of them in my account and have never had the opportunity to use any - due to all my AA domestic flights being in the F cabin as part of DONE4 fares. However, I have several US-based Plat colleagues who use them regularly with probably around 50% success rate.

When I was AA Plat last year, I successfully used up my four 500-mile upgrades and purchased an additional upgrade online for my JFK/LAX trip. Never mind that it was ticketed with a QF flight number, it still let me request it via the AA website.

Not sure if you can still do that - I think it needs to be ticketed as AA now, but I could be wrong...

For the AA upgrades to be valid to use, it needs to be an AA flight number. If you had a QF codeshare on the AA flight, I am surprised that it let you request it and also surprised that it upgraded you since QF R class is still an economy class rather than AA R class which is the business class electronic upgrade class

I don't believe that the ticket has to be issued by AA for the electronic upgrade credit use

I used mine for the first time last week and successful on 2 sectors for myself and mrsdrron.Had email 36 hours before flight confirming upgrade.
Next week though it should be working out how to use my EVIPs.

eVIPs is easy... Check for C class availability if upgrading to business or for A class if upgrading to 1st from business. If it is available , then just phone AA and request the upgrade and confirmed there and then

I logged onto AA.com and searched using name/AAflt/date and it brought up my LOC in the AA system. I then requested the upgrade online. It returned an error and so when I called the Plat Desk, they lodged the upgrade request manually. It then was reflected as a request on AA.com. The upgrade came through on the day, no problem.

Yeah, they usually come through as long as you request far enough
in advance (and of course subject to availability).

I find I accrue them quicker than I can use them since
the ratio of domestic to international flights is rather different
for Australian AA plats compared to our US fellows.

The same here. I have never used any because all my AA domestic flights have been in A class anyway due to being part of DONE4 fares. But they may come in handy some time. I have US-based work colleagues that manage to use them regularly, and even have to buy more every now and then.
