As posted and linked by our friend thadocta in the QF News (not) thread on FT, earlier this month the A380 passed its rejected take-off breaking test.

It is interesting to note that they used MSN001 aircraft, which is the one that visited Australia with Qantas livery and will be the one to be the first A380 flight into LAX shortly.

I was wondering the same, i thought maybe so they did not explode due to the hight temps and heat ?

That airframe is the first produced correct ?
Anybody found a list of airframs being produced for A380, ie what goes to which customer ?

Why are the tyres deflated after stopping?
The braking action causes the brakes to heat up significantly. In fact, they will be glowing red hot for some time after stopping. That heat is transferred to the tyres just because they are close enough proximity. The heating of the tyres causes them to increase in pressure to the point where they would explode if left to their own devices. To avoid such an over-pressure explosion, the tyres are fitted with pressure plugs that pop out when the pressure or temperature exceeds certain limits.

So it is very expected and planned that the tyres will deflate under such conditions. This is why the test requires the aircraft to be brought to a complete stop and then to taxied under its own power for a certain distance. This taxi process allows some heat relief on the breaks as they move through the air as well as ensuring the tyres have not burst or deflated prematurely.

They must then wait 5 minutes before any external support can be used to extinguish resulting fires or to cool the brakes with water/foam from emergency services vehicles. Its is during that 5 minute wait that the tyres are expected to deflate rather than explode. In the end it is cheaper to replace 16 tyres than it is replace an aircraft and 555 passengers.

The A340-600 test resulted in some spectacular tyre explosions that hampered the efforts of emergency crews to extinguish fires started by the overheated brakes.

It was interesting to note that the passenger version of the A380-800 only has braking on 16 of its 20 main wheels, while the freight version (if it is ever made) will have braking on all 20 of its wheels due to its increased planned MTOW.

Yes, MSN001 was the first one built. It was also the same aircraft that made the first A380 visit to Australia[/quote]
