After reading QF009's trips reports, have started considering other options for our planned travel on QF...

We are booked on QF32 A380 J later this month - travelling with Mrs Djf, F is full; considering switching to QF30 744 J and submitting a points upgrade to F (120k, F still reasonably empty). Mrs Djf will be SG at that stage, and I am AA PLT (though I know that counts for little).

So assuming the gamble on the upgrade coming through is likely to pay off, how does 744 F compare to A380 J and is it worth having a go?

Seatwise you wont see that much difference between A380J and 744F - both lie flat. The massive difference will be in service/food.

Though on the 744 you get the much older IFE which if that is a big deal for you then avoid old F like the plague.

The service is much more personalised, and catering and booze is of a much higher standard in F. Also in F you get proper mattresses and duvets - I do feel much more rested after a flight in F.

The main points of contention are first, as simongr pointed out - the IFE is the older variety on 744 F and the screen sizes aren't too different between A380 J and 744 F, though between enjoying the service and the F champers I hardly noticed the IFE; second - if you have broad shoulders you might find the 744 F seats a tad narrow around your shoulders even when compared to the 744 J. The width wasn't a problem at all for me though given my size. :p

I would not generally pay for F with cash - but with points: go for it, even on the 744!
