Hi AFF, I have a flight coming up in Y on QF1 SYD > LHR on an a380.

I booked it a while ago and selected 51K and didn't think too much about it. I just realised that I believe this is a bassinet row.

I have questions, I am 180cm, will the wall have a good amount of leg room or uncomfortable amount?

If a baby is seated in the bassinet is there a risk I will be moved/ it will be directly beside me?

Has anyone had an experience with this row, will I be expecting hell on earth if I am trapped next to a baby in a bassinet?

Should I move to another seat?

I'm 185cm and stretching out when reclined is a challenge. That said, it's not a bad seat for a short day flight up to SIN.

Unlikely to be moved, as I believe the aisle and middle seat are set aside, unless the baby's family is a large booking. Getting out of your seat with the bassinet deployed is a whole different story......

Thank you for the input, I did end up moving to 51C (unfortunately is next to the galley) but I think I would prefer that then risk being stuck at the b-head with a baby arms length away for 24.5 hours.

I searched the internet and these forums and found very little information on that area. Made me realise how under reviewed economy is vs Y+, J and F. Hopefully this thread provides useful information for someone looking to book row 51 in the future.

You could still end up with a baby in 51C!

I sat at the bulkhead with an infant a couple weeks ago… the heaps of legroom made up for any potential downsides.

In the end the baby was as quiet as a mouse!

I’m not sure which seat is actually the bassinet seat? If the bassinet is closer to the window perhaps the parents would have traded the aisle with you?

51C isn't a bulkhead seat, bulkhead is only 52 DEFG and 51 HJK

The bassinet is 52 D,G 51 H on the seat map (its the ones blocked from booking) but from a YouTube video briefly showing the seat the bassinet is pretty much in front of 51J.

I think @MEL_Traveller meant that an infant can still be in a non bulkhead seat. It is quite possible to find an infant in ANY economy seat - they are not restricted to a bulkhead bassinet seat.

Note there are rules regarding eligibility for infant bassinet. They have to be under 11 kg and less than a year old . You might get a 2 year old next to you in 51A or B. You might find no infants on the flight and you gave up a great seat.

The view from 51K. Can't fully stretch out but I would take it over a normal economy seat.

Edit: if you were going to switch out of 51K because of the proximity to the bassinet, why switch to 51C where you are practically right next to the 52D bassinet?

And they have to fit lengthwise (71cm is bassinet size). Fletty_jr is on track to reach that by 1yo anyway (well before 11kg).
We'll be doing plenty of flights not in a bassinet.

I flew in 51K from LHR-SIN. Clearly I don't look like I've children as the poor couple seated next to me were super apologetic in advance (not that they needed to be - their baby didn't make a sound). Even with the bassinet down, as someone 5'11 tall it was completely tolerable - not having someone recline into you and being able to raise your legs somewhat horizontally is a godsend for that flight. I don't really get up all that much, so that could be the only (potentially awkward) thing depending on whether you opt for window or aisle.

I think I actually slept better on that segment despite my upgrade clearing SIN-MEL...

exactly this :)

There are only a few bassinet seats, and sometimes infants are at non bulkhead seats.

Additionally, sometimes infants are at non bulkhead seats and adults are in the bulkhead seats for reasons that still escape me
Adults for the comfort. And parents potentially because they didn’t know, or their baby was too large. Some airlines limit infants as low as 7kg the couple next to me were telling me. They were happily surprised QF had a higher limit, but in their connecting flight they weren’t able to get one.

Having travelled with my kids from when they were only a few months old, my advice to passengers is it’s far safer (and more comfortable with the bulkhead legroom) being next to an infant in a bassinet (who will sleep most if a long haul flight) than risking being next to a toddler who is mobile and needs to be entertained
