Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has recent experience of the kids meal in J on the A380 (obviously not personally consuming it but seeing what your own darlings have pushed around the plate)?

boygr is a pretty good eater (sushi, prawns, chow mein, haloumi, pea fritters, blue cheese - just not mashed potatoes) and I am tossing up between the kids meal and the adult meal. There are times (generally over sushi) when he will eat more than me...

I have NFI if the kids meal in J is different to the whY kids meal.

Cheers

Did J on 744 and A332 int'l recently with ms spatsky. Ordered J kids meal.

Awesome food. Lunch was lasagne and was better than my dried out beef that i got (i got half the lasagne too :) ). Fruit salad entree (better than lettuce leaves), and great dessert.

Thanks Boris - it will be interesting to see some comparisons as well. Sounds like a nice feed for the boy.

I have just ordered my first Kids meal to Sin for travel in June have never bothered before, but thought give it a go as Jnr. seems to eat just the fruit and bread on previous flights. Tell us how you go from what i've read online it can be very random on whats served and travel class does not make a difference it seems.

Had my two boys on A380 J 2 weeks ago (QF93). From memory it was a ham and cheese sandwich and carrot/celery sticks, cheese, chips, etc. nothing fancy, but he wasn't looking for anything more or less.... Probably the same as Y.

Hmmm ours was definitely a J meal, served as 3 courses with silver cutlery etc. Not a Y meal. If there is a risk of a ham sandwich i would take an adult meal!

My girls got the Y kids meal plated and served in J on a TT op-up. The CSM was very apologetic but advised that there were no J kids meals available TT. The meal was supplemented by regular J accompaniments and to be honest the J meal by itself would have been better. Every kids meal I have seen (excl breakfast) on any flight has been either bangers and mash or some type of over-cooked pasta.
I would make an enquiry of the P1-SST as I think this will be very flight dependent.

Simngr, I've got photos that I'll post. Haven't noticed a difference in J kids meals for Intl on A380 vs A330 or 747. I find there's a lot of food, even compared to the adult meals, I guess so the child can graze or there are options if they don't like one thing.
A common entree has been a plate of ~5 ham slices with some tomato slices. My Little zmss loves her pork products, and sometimes that has sufficed.

I heard it will be a dukkah crusted gold dummy after March 31 for certain routes :D :D

My kids had the J meals on 93 and 94 in Nov and Dec last year. They are good meals - large portions and healthy/balanced - I remember a large serve of brocolli in the lunch/dinners. Breakfast was good too. It is the full 3 course meal. Note that as with special meals in J, the crew need to be prompted for the midflight snack - ie if you don't ask they won't give it to you - note also that mid flight snack might take 20 mins to heat up. On QF 93 I use the kids mid flight snack as their dinner and after this they usually settle and go to sleep.

It certainly does need to be preordered and is very different to the Y tray kids meal. Obviously on an OPUP the food won't have been loaded. I have no hesitation in recommending the Qantas J meal and will keep ordering it for my kids.

It's pretty simple :)

Babies can scream and cry and can't be controlled

Kids over 4 are generally fine

Lets try keeping on topic please, screaming, crying and uncontrollable is not a definition limited to babies :)

I wasn't going to dignify comments like this but might indulge myself. My only experience flying with an infant in J was my own. He had a few moments that were easily controlled. Sadly my wife didn't sleep due to the family with 5 and 7 year olds whose parents talked to them whilst they all had headphones on and were too lazy and inconsiderate to think about other people.

Thanks to everyone who made useful and informative comments. We have a few months to go still so am looking forward to more experiences. Great tip re the special meal prep.

Cheers to some.

Found some pics. We've typically missed out on a child's meal on points upgrades (often they are still in Y, rarely have the FAs ever managed to successfully retrieve the meals, and Little Miss has mostly eaten bread rolls in those scenarios. Sometimes she isn't that hungry), but did get CHMLs for our purchased J flights to/from London.

This is the entree, salad, fruit salad, choc bar, and popper. Other juices/soft drinks are available as per the J bevvie list. (and water)

This is the main - lasagne. Quite tasty, but Little Miss didn't touch it. When travelling, she doesn't always want to eat per the plane's dining schedules. There will be kids snacks loaded, but like the toasted sandwishes, may take 20mins to cook (hot snacks).

Snack before arriving in SIN. IIRC, this is the typical INtl mid-flight snack loaded for CHML.

Little Miss fell asleep in JLounge in SIN, and after some whinging, as she wanted to recline her seat during takeoff prep, feel asleep a bit before takeoff. She didn't eat dinner or snack on this flight.
However, she was awake in her Skeybed Mk II cubby for breakfast. Waffles, croissant, fruit salad, and cornflakes.

To contrast, this is BA J CHML from LHR-CDG.

Hot part of J CHML LHR-CDG. Could not get Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (or whatever the series on dinner ladies) out of my head with those smiley faced potato cakes.

CHML Entree - salad, vege and chees wrapped in ham, and bread roll. Dessert is also there.

CHML main. Can't remember what it was. My FIL was quite sick due to food poisoning in London on this flight, and my main concern was keeping Little Miss unaware of her grandfather's state. (Doctor called, given oxygen, luckily didn't need to turn around or land and get him to hospital)

And for anyone who thinks a child's meal in J is "the same" as Y, this is what Little Miss got in Y SYD-BKK in Dec 2012:

(I do rather like the organic juice and muesli bar they get on the ex-Aus Y Intl trays).

I alwaye have snacks in case (rice wheels, fruit poles, vegemite diping bikkies). Eating in the lounge pre-flight can mean Little Miss isn't too interested in the first meal served on most Intl flights.

There is a children's menu in Flounge, too. Will try to find a pic, my computer isn't very happy right now.
