Haven't read this elsewhere (apologies if it is posted already), but according to routes online, QF is planning to run A330s between SYD and HNL from 14 SEP & 27 DEC. Be a nice upgrade from the 767 for those travelling, particularly in J.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Might be time to have a quick look at award availability in "U" class for those dates & set some flight alerts in Expert Flyer.

Of course with JASA's having gone the same way as the dodo I imagine people will now be looking at doing these awards via AA/US/CX/BA/AS because the 'taxes' will be heaps cheaper.

You won't see the 767 back I suspect given the retirement of the 767 Int configs, the temporary thing is more likely the supp service:

Supplementary Services to Honolulu 03 July 2014

Qantas has upgraded its services between Sydney and Honolulu and published supplementary services in response to strong customer demand over the holiday periods.

Qantas currently operates Boeing 767 services between Sydney and Honolulu up to four times per week (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and on Saturdays in peak periods).

From 14 September to 27 December Qantas will upgrade the aircraft to an Airbus A330 and add A330 supplementary services on some Saturdays to cater for increased demand.

The Qantas A330 offers customers travelling in Business an award-winning Skybed with in-seat video screens, two complimentary self-service bars, as well as an International Business service including Neil Perry-designed menus, inflight amenities and pyjamas. Customers in Economy enjoy a comfortable seat with an enhanced adjustable winged headrest, contemporary menus and a continuous refreshment service. All customers can enjoy over 500 on-demand entertainment options and premium Australian wines.

All flights are subject to last minute schedule and aircraft changes.

The first quote actually sounds good and is a genuine improvement with lots to offer over the International J in the 767s.

The second quote is really struggling to find a differentiator!!

Does the entertainment offering go backwards?

Anything would be better than HA who charge for IFE & snacks. You don't even know what you're watching as the in-flight magazine doesn't specify but IIRC it usually has a few short docos on surfing, a coffee plantation, ukueles & a rainforest.

Both flights I've had have been on the HA B767 HNL/BNE so haven't flown on the HA A330.

I don't think so. I think the seat back IFE is at least as good as if not better than the iPad with Q-Streaming.

QF website says Q-Streaming is better than the A330's

You can choose from over 200 hours of movies, television and radio programs. This is even greater choice than what is currently available on our International Boeing 747 and Airbus 330 aircraft.

Oops .

The IPads are clumsy though. In the Dreamtime seat you cannot use the tray to eat and watch the iPad. It is either/or. At least on the domestic configs you just hang the iPad up on the seat in front. Skybed Mk1 with the built in IFE is better from that point of view.

I find ipads annoying in the extreme so prefer the ife in the seat back of the A330's or B737's.

If I'm on the B767 I don't even bother with the ipad & will find enough to do on my netbook or reading material.

I haven't experienced the iPads/Q-Streaming so I won't say one is better than the other. IMO the seatback IFE sounds like it would be less clumsy.

Used the iPads for the first time in a long while the other night and it was a PITA pausing and buffering every 5 mins or so. Not sure if it is a regular thing but I won't be rushing back to experience them again anytime soon

Long haul always load up my iPad with my fav. music videos (I have a hundred) and hire a movie or 3 and watch what i want. Most flights I don't even turn the IFE on.

How much longer is Qantas going to be touting this "award winning Skybed" line?

Thomas Edison won awards for the light bulb, but you don't see 'Award winning light bulbs now $0.99' in the Woollies catalogue. The product is outdated.

Probably for as long as any other airline/business 'flaunt' their awards/'achievements'...'chest beating' isn't unique to QF

It's aimed at the uninitiated

Maybe so however on the HNL to Aus route its actually the best equipment on offer, with recliners the best when in comes to alternatives.

I meant in general. Not disputing the fact that it's a major upgrade on the route.

The iPads are a good stop gap measure and better than nothing, but they are clumsy, annoying, and are never as good as proper in seat IFE.
The last flight I went on with iPads the one in my seat pocket just froze, the iPad in the shadow seat was out of battery, luckily the person in the aisle didn't want to use her iPad and thus gave it to me for the flight. The previous flight I used iPad's it was very slow to respond to my requests (such as finding a movie / starting / stopping) to the point it was painful, and the first time I was in a exit row (767), which meant I needed to put the iPad on the tray and bend my neck down to see it / move the iPad out of the way when morning tea was served.
