A330 development - A330 NEO

Hmm. I'd have thought the A350 would have replaced the A330, then boeing is doing the 777-X so I suppose there must be a market for incremental improvement.

Seeing as they only have the A330-200 and A330-300 (and different versions within those numbers)... I'm more surprised they chose to head straight to 800/900, skipping 400-700 :p

I figure reducing fuel consumption 14% per seat is big, but a 400nm range improvement seems rather weak? When I look at the 777-300 compared to the 777-8X/9X by comparison, there seems like a bigger jump all around than what Airbus are offering.

So it finally happened. Although I would have thought that it overlaps too much with the A350.

Are they stepping on their own toes here? Or is it a brilliant decision?

I am wondering the same question.

But my assessment via Wikipedia would be, remember it will arrive in 2018 and the 777X isn’t expected to show up until 2020 and by slipping in the A330neo in 2017 Airbus may have something going for them. Andthe A330neo -900 is apparently ~310 seats which is larger than both 787 – 800/900 ( of course this changes all the time ). this means you might not have the range of a 787-9/10 but you do have a booming Asian market and the opportunity to offer an efficient product that is probably much cheaper to develop that will be quickly on the market and is potentially available to customers who missed 787 slots.

One similar example might be Toyota and their 4x4 range Rav 4 , Kluger, Prado, Landcrusier and the various version of each which I am sure have crossover in some areas but it seems to work for Toyota.

I agree that the range isn't much of an issue, especially since the ULH routes have mostly proven that they aren't viable (for now), and the only airlines that really want a massive range are the Middle Eastern airlines.

I suppose Airbus want the 330neo to compete with the 788 market, while the 350 fits between the 787 and 777X.

Or have I read this completely wrong?

Isn't the A350 more of a 777X competitor?

Well the A359 is smaller than the 778X and the A351 is either comparable to the 8X, or fits between the 8X and 9X. So it kind of is.

The fact that the A359 isn't that much bigger than the A333 is why I'm curious. Also, surely this must be the official death of the A358.

So I thought the reason the A350-800 exists is range and then I ended up with this... thansk to wiki and flight global

There's only 34 A358's on order. Almost doesn't make sense for Airbus to go ahead with it.

Better to give them a free upgrade to the A359 and and take the A358 off the menu.

That's what you would think. Although some airlines like HA only ordered the A358, which suggests that's what they wanted. Will be interesting to see what eventuates.

I thought HA was the only one left not to have switched to the 359 (ie. last remaining A358 customer)?

I'd say the A358 is a goner, and an A339 would be ideal for HA so i'd say they're highly likely to switch, it'll be a conversation on price that's ongoing.
