I'm in Sydney, about to depart for Jakarta to commence a 10 day trip to Saudi Arabia and Doha, there having a very cheap 5 star 'Doha stopover' from QR. Mixed feelings. Someone close to me has been gravely ill and the trip was in doubt until 2 days ago, but still might be cut short. So we'll see how we go. And of course there is the small thing that there might be a war nearby, too.

Main thing to se this time is northern Saudi, where the southern part of the Nabatean empire existed (the Nabateans built Petra), and there are Petra-like tombs near Al Ula plus other historical stuff. Plus the holy city of Madinah, which until recently was closed to non-Muslims; Mecca still is. A couple of days in Jeddah.

I visited Saudi twice for work in the 1990s

A trip (report) down memory lane - Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the 90s!

Yes, we went round the country in a Merc - those were the days! And we visited one of King Solomon's Mines - Mhad a Dhab, where they actually let us into the gold room (almost unheard of for visitors to get access).

Those aren't refined gold bars; let’s say 80% and only 10kg each. At the gold price then of US385/oz, ~US$135,000 each. Maybe 20 bars - ~US$2.7 million. Of course at today's gold price, I was holding ~US$1.7 million's worth, and the stash ~US$34 million. Edit : times those values by 80%.

So the plan is
HBA-SYD-HBA VA paid J
SYD-CGK-SYD QF Award in J
CGK-DOH-JED-DOH-CGK in QR paid J, with a 'Doha Stopover of 2 nights in the Accor Mondrian, Doha courtesy of QR stopover, $354 for 2 nights, DOH-JED-DOH is marked as First, but its just business, but does allow access to Al Safwa First Lounge in DOH!

A few nights in Jeddah - Clarion at JED on Choice Hotels points, and the Movenpick Tahlia. I was hoping to book the new Jeddah Raffles, but it didn't open when scheduled.

Pullman in Madinah, one night each way

Haramain fast train JED-Madinah-JED in business. This caused a bit of a problem. They only allow ONE case even in business, plus a 'personal item'. This has meant I have had to bring my gym bag rather than carry-on for my carry-on and I'll cram it into the case for the train.

Enterprise hire-car Madinah to Al Ula and 'Cloud 7' residences at Al Ula.

Onboard for this one as have visited Saudi Arabia a couple of times and planning another visit in the near future. Things are changing quite rapidly over there so always keen to hear reports

I haven't visited Saudi for more than 20 years and interested to see what you think and experience.

Separate tickets for the CGK transit, how long of a stopover do you have there to manage the risk of QF delays on its aging A330 fleet?

Is this just a recent thing?
We have flown many MEL/SYD-CGK flights with Qf and I reckon the worst delay was about an hour. Most we have flown get in early. For QR out of CGK we prefer the morning flight out as it gets to DOH at a decent time so we would always build at least 1 night stay into it.

Overnight at the Anara hotel at Jakarta Airport for a daytime QR flight the next day. QF41 still on time for a departure two hours from now.

Hobart toSydney was on VA1533, 1C.

The usual premium Hobart Airport boarding experience. No lounge

Lunch was a choice of a curry or a pasta and the curry was really nice.

Following the flight on Flighty, but it got a bit lost

Overnight at the Sofitel Wentworth. I booked a superior room with a request for a walk-in shower and no noise. They called me a couple of days prior and said no room in my category or the upgrade category that I’m entitled to has a walk-in shower. After a small hint they upgraded me two steps to a junior suite.

On arrival they said they upgraded me further to the Prestige suite on the top floor corner.

But with a bit of careful positioning @SYD 😊), I could see this

Careful inspection of the top picture will reveal something missing from this room of an Accor Plat. No welcome amenity. Check fridge no not there either.

I went for a walk looking to buy a broad brim hat to replace my ancient Akubra Discovered new Akubras start at $350 😳. No.

Back to the hotel and still no welcome amenity. I wouldn’t normally bother but this is the Sofitel so went down to the club Reception and noted that absence. They seemed shocked said it would be there very shortly. It was. Some nice chokkies and a bottle of Legacy red which, given my destination, was left behind.

The club canapés spread was pretty good. Some nice wines, roast pork with crackling, a lovely salmon dish and the usual salads, dips and cheeses.

Overall a very nice stay. The lack of walk-in showers beyond the suites I think will limit my returning though.

I stayed there in December. No plat welcome gift either. I didn't bother with it as I have no interest in cough wine and trying to cut down on sugar. Seems to be a theme there though. The new gym is really nice though!

You certainly didn't miss anything regarding the lounge. MrsK and I flew home from Hobart in late Dec and only spent five minutes in the Qantas "Lounge" before going back out into the main terminal, where there was more room and better options.

Brekky in the lounge, a walk around the botanical gardens then back to the hotel check out in an Uber.

Exactly 30 minutes from Uber arrival at the hotel, to the airport, easy check in at First class, straight through security, straight through immigration and up to the lounge. 😊

Spot of lunch, smoked salmon and toasted rice and then duck noodles and pav.

All really good. Lounge wasn’t crowded either.

Went to buy some AirTags next generation and they only had first generation on sale. 😂.

Boarding, and the pilots arrive.

IMG_1981.jpeg

On board and golly! the new amenity kit

IMG_1983.jpeg

This, plus socks and eye shade

And that brings me up-to-date.
