Hi all I'm of to the USA, and need a recommendation for accommodation in Washington, I always stay at the Hays Adams, but I'm going there with two mates who are a little more budget concise than I.

I'm not looking for a dump, just a good place to stay with two others that's close to the land marks.

A three bedroom serviced apartment may be good or a good 4 star Hotel

All suggestions would be gratefully received.

I've stayed at the Hilton DoubleTree at the intersection of 16th St NW & Rhode Island NW.

A 5 ~ 10 minute walk to the White House, and 15 minute walk to Constitution Ave NW.

Metro stations aren't far away either and taxi's are fairly cheap.

There's some good non-expensive restaurants a few minutes walk away around P St NW & 14th St NW, as well as a supermarket that has a good range of takeaway food.

I haven't checked prices recently, but my top hotels in DC are the Hay Adams, The St Regis and the Willard (although probably in the same price bracket). There's also the W, which I've stayed at once, but don't remember how much it was. Some slightly lower priced options (but I haven't stayed there) are the Hyatt Regency and JW Marriott.

I'm a Hilton guy and the Capital Hilton is nearby and is an OK 4 star hotel. Using the MVP rate I stayed there in April for $119 a night. If you're not staying around election time the pricing should be very reasonable.

I'm staying at the Capital in Nov got a good rate. Anything I should expect / look out for / good places to eat?

The lobster & steak at the Capital Hilton restaurant are very good. Alternatively the Olive Garden across the road is good too.

I can recommend the West End Marriott on 12th Street NW. Metro Center Station right next door, Starbucks in the lobby, lovely beds. And from what I remember, very reasonably priced too.

The burgers over the road at PJ Clarke's were probably the best I've had. Other than that there are plenty of bars around Foggy Bottom. On Saturday night there were a few kickball teams going wild with beer pong and binge drinking generally which brought back fond memories of my uni days.

Edit: The exec lounge is pretty basic and gets very crowded at breakfast (only continental from memory). It's useful for soft drinks though and has a pc.

If modern history is something you go for - the Willard is a minor destination in its own right - it was the hotel where the Revd Dr Martin Luther King Jnr. stayed while he wrote and then delivered his famous "I have a dream' speech. Its thr hotel which I'll be using wehen I stay in Obama-land (hopefully) mid-2013.

It's also the hotel where the word "lobby" was conceived, as people used wait in the hotel foyer (before it was called a lobby) to lobby members of congress.

Interesting...

I'm hoping to go to Washington for around 10 days in August with my daughter. She'll stay back for a year for studies at Georgetown. Will look for suitable accommodation for those 10 days around New Jersey Avenue.
