A month in Hoi An

Exactly as it says on the tin
Just completed our second day here. I think that leaves 27 to go.
Decided I won't bother with a blow by blow account of the happenings. We're here to mostly attempt relaxing, and escape the usual issues of dealing with two neurospicy kids during the school holidays. We're still having those issues of course. We're just doing it somewhere else. With a pool. And food. And endless coffee.

So I'll mostly be just doing some photo dumping with a little commentary here and there. If you enjoy that wonderful. If not, I do apologise. I'll provide particulars of travel and accommodation at some point also.

Such narrow housing would take a bit to get used to. I know there's logic to it, although I'm not 100% certain what it is.

We had dinner at Madame Kieu on our last trip here. 2018. The family has changed. The place, and the food, have not.

We love getting away for Christmas to void all the tourists and traffic though e go to Bangkok.
Haven't had a Christmas at home for 2+ years but this Christmas we will be at home The invasion begins tonight.

So enjoy Hoi An. You might find it becomes your Christmas destination frequently.

Apparently a historical thing from Land tax - the narrower the frontage the lower the tax. Saw them everywhere in Vietnam and also Cambodia. Maybe it was a French Colonial thing?

Anyway, hope the rain has eased off? The flooding in Hoi An a few weeks ago was really bad.

The rain is ok. Heavy at times, light more often. Periods of cloud. Evidence of floods remain, but everything is operating as normal. So far so good.

Yesterday we made, and ate, a stack of dumplings.

Last night we watched the Bamboo Circus, which was very impressive. No pics allowed though.

But they allow pics at the night market, and the banana Nutella crepes are also worth a visit.

Breakfast this morning was Cam Coffee n More.
Coconut coffee and the egg scramble.
Bloody good and I will be returning to try their German sausage croissant.

I won't ask how the flight was.. but if the kids are open to new sights, smells and Asian food I think you'll all do Ok

Today's major activity was Thanh Ha Pottery Village. It's still showing the signs of recent floods, but they're up and running and the kids enjoyed their experience. Kind of wish I'd joined in, but my job is to take pics and videos for the wife. And carry things.

More pottery village. Some famous sites recreated, funny loo signs, the old kiln, and a decent rooftop view.

So good to have the option of food delivery through Grab. Delicious pancake and cau lao noodle, with spring rolls. The vego daughter had some mash potato and coughtake mushrooms. The boy had weetbix as usual.

We've really crammed a bit into a few days. More than I think we expected given the usual limits the kids have on their endurance and regulation powers.

Yesterday we booked an E-buggy tour of the Old Town. VND500k for a driver and same again for the guide. A bit over $60aud for an hour. Saw some old Chinese houses, new hotel developments on newly built islands, and some other stuff. Finished at the market where we had lunch, and then got roped into buying some banana clothes from a nearby store. Cost too much but nothing to be super troubled by. Still just a pittance for us but meaningful for the seller no doubt. Dinner at Purple Lantern near An Bang beach. Pork ribs were great.

Midday on a Wednesday and there is some sort of family gathering next door and they either have hired a singed or they're doing karaoke. Either way it's load and awful.

So we went for a walk to get coffee and groceries. Ca phe sua on the way out from the little joint on our corner. Glorious, although not a fan of the "tea water".

Pleased the kids can cope with the short walk to the Winmart along the busy street.
The banh mi comes from a cart near the Winmart. Simple, delicious, and less than $2.

Santa packed a whole suitcase ahead of time. That's why I only had a carry on.

Is the accommodation Airbnb ?

Yes.
Alana Homestay. It's a 5 bed place but we're only paying for 3. The other two are locked. Being a bit out of Old Town has some drawbacks, convenience wise. More car rides and being distant from sites. But it means extra space for the kids, and less people to hear them when they aren't coping with life.
