A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Typically for instant upgrade fares, segments between mainland USA and the Caribbean on 2 class aircraft have business and economy designated cabins.

The booking class for each segment within the one booking can vary. You do need to check this out. More in this thread:

I class is really only found for flights within the USA where it is a three class flight.

Serfty,

I got to know of farecompare from that very thread !

Will keep on learning ... with your help.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Hi,

I just booked our MH business fares through the Aadvantage program from Mel to CDG via KUL. I know date and time changes are free but can you change the departure airport for free?

Sydney wasn't available in business class but has suddenly become available and would suit better. Wondering if change to Syd-KUL-CDG for no charge?

Hope you AA experts can assist.

Thanks,
Dale.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Unless you have AA Exp status the charge is $150 per ticket for a change of origin or destination

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Wow, massive download of AAdvantage info from here.

My flying habits consist of (well for last QF year, this and, most likely, the next):

1. PER-Pilbara-PER in full Y x approx 25/yr
2. PER-TSV-PER partial and full Y x 2 or 3/yr
3. Intl, usually PER-HKG-PER (next time as a JASA, usually cheap Y) once only.

Questions:

1. Is it worth me crediting to AA instead of QF;
2. Is it worth me joining AA just to be able to purchase points towards awards (seem like good value to me);
3. Will this flying give me status with AA?

Any help here?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Looking at the total annual travel I would think you are better off keeping QFF as your main programme and joining AAdvantage to use for Miles purchase. That way you can retain WP and gather points from flights, CC spend and say, Everyday Rewards. You should then gather enough QF points for at least a one-way trip overseas (Europe?). Buying AA miles will allow you to fly back from your destination (60000 miles in J from Europe) at a reasonable cost. If you need a few extra AA miles you can always insert your AA number into some of your flights.
Hope this helps.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

or to put it a slightly different way for 11sjw

Credit to QFF until you reach WP and then credit the remainder to AA. If you really only want lounge access and cheap awards stop with QFF at SG.

If you can justify flying international more frequently than every 12 months, base your international tickets in SIN, HKG or KUL. And the long hual tickets should be issued from CMB, PNH or TPE depending on the direction of travel.

Happy wandering

Fred

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Hi,

Some queries regarding the situation of an AA Miles booking.

The bookings for my wife and I were done under separate AA confirmation numbers as the points came out of our separate accounts.

We have received the e-tickets via email and they correctly state the flights are in business. However when we login to our AAdvantage accounts and look up the reservation it says economy. They certainly deducted business level of points.

The flights are with Malaysian and Qantas - when we go to the Malaysian website the outbound sectors are showing but say economy though the seat allocation is in business. We can't find our returning flights on Malaysian with the booking references that AA gave us.

I seem to recall there is a website where you can locate your record for a OneWorld booking - what is the url of that site?

I just want to make sure the actual carrier - Malaysian - has our booking correct.

Thanks,
Dale.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

When I made a first class booking last year it also showed as Y but my F seats were ok.

Once you locate the PNR you can go to checkymytrip.com and find out for sure.

Happy travelling.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Thanks for that. How do I locate the PNR? AA gave me some booking references but they aren't all working.

Dale.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

My MH booking, booked in U class, also says "economy". I called MH and had them assign seats for us and they are definitely in business class (row 2 for all flights - they won't assign row 1 since is blocked as the bassinet position). The incorrect reporting as "economy" is just a reflection that the lookup table they are using for "U" class has not be correctly identified as Business Class.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Happy days!!
I made a booking previously for HKG-NRT-LAX on CX/AA F awards for Dec. Kept an eye on availability and have now managed to score two F seats on JL NRT-LAX. Rang up and requested the change and was done free of charge.
As a bonus it now looks from the seat map that we will be in the new JAL F suites on the 77W :D
On the downside I don't know how I'll get my 8 year old to travel whY again  :p

Hi Dale,

If you call AA with the AA booking reference and ask for the Malaysian (?) airlines booking reference they should have no trouble giving this to you and you can then usually check your booking on that carriers website to confirm.

I do this with AA and Qantas and they have never had any problems providing the Qantas booking reference when requested.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Yes they gave me the Qantas reference for the Australian leg of the journey and that works perfectly. The Malaysian ones don't work on their website and I'm having terrible problems with the hone lines to Malaysia for some reason. Just sent them a online form enquiry to check things out. Apparently Malaysia system only uses a 5 digit system rather than the 6 digits used by nearly all other airlines and hence their code doesn't work on checkmytrip.com

Thanks,
Dale.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Has anyone has success booking four award tickets to travel together looking to fly next year to LHR, BA is showing availability but the taxes are quite high?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

BA is the only airline with AA awards that passes on full fuel surcharges. Try using a site like Award Nexus to find an alternative airline. Cathay goes via Hong Kong, Malaysia via KUL, Qantas etc.

Dale.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Thanks ,I had a play around with Award Nexus last night and unable to any availability up until end of January , probably need more practice using the system.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Hi,

I've used up my credits so can't search for you at the moment.

When searching for OneWorld flights I found that checking the box for BA is the best. This doesn't mean you are only searching for BA airline flights but using the search facility that BA provides. The help manual for Award Nexus is very good and that does help.

Where are you flying from and where trying to get to? Might be able to give some tips on the search parameters.

Dale.
