As you may know we migrated to a new server a few weeks ago. As a result of this migration our trusted old server is now sitting idle in my spare room. (Thanks again to PrincessK for arranging picking it up and arranging transport to Melbourne.)

The server is just 3 years old, and in good working order (Before the comments start flooding in: the performance problems we experienced were not hardware-related. They were to do with the datacentre where the server was located).

As we don't need the server anymore, I was going to sell it on eBay. From memory the cost was about $4,000 and is probably worth about $1,500 to someone who really needs it.

As I was listing the item on eBay, I suddenly became sentimental - after all this ugly grey box was the "life and soul" of AFF for 3 years. To me it didn't seem right to flog it off to an anonymous bidder.

AFF is a community, and we all give freely of our time to make our community a better place. I am no exception, so I am offering the old AFF Server for free to an AFF member who needs it. My preference is for it to be used for non-commercial purposes. Ideally, a charity or not-for-profit organisation. If it is to be used commercially, I will ask that the new owner makes a donation on behalf of AFF to a charity (you keep the tax credit, I am not interested in that. More the acknowledgement.)

These are the specifications:
HP DL160 G6 E5504 12GB Memory
HP 160 GB SATA HDD
32G SSD
ILO Advanced Pack

The server is located in Melbourne. You will need to pick it up or arrange delivery.

This is not a "first come, first served" offer. If you are interested, you can post on this thread or PM me. I will make a subjective decision based on the member's contribution to AFF and the intended use of the server. If there are no suitable applicants, I guess I'll go back to eBay and try to be less sentimental!!

Bravo! I haven't been long on this forum, but this sense of community is what makes me keep coming back.

Hope someone on here gets it. Great idea admin.

I imagine you will be removing the hard drives before you sell the server, but I think it's a great idea to offer it around. The other thing you could do is offer it to a small charity who could benefit from it, I would be happy to donate some money to AFF to cover some the cost, perhaps we could take up a collection.

Just an idea

Unless someone here really needs this I second the idea of donation to charity.

I work for a rather large ICT company and part of our work is taking care of charitable groups who - believe or not - have great need for any technology they can get.

Royal Flying Doctor service comes to mind ;)

This is a pretty generous offer, and whilst I can think of a hundred projects I could put this server to good use with, I'm going to be lucky to get even a fraction of them off the ground (just don't have time)...

So I second Mrmaxwells suggestion of donating it to the RFDS, as it keeps in nicely with the sites aviation theme...

I have had a few queries. Please realise that this is a commercial rack server. It is not designed to operate in an office, but rather in a data centre. You "rent" co-location space on their rack for a fixed monthly fee. This usually includes power, air con, and very basic support. Data and server management is extra. So there are some costs involved in using the server. I used Servers Australia (see their prices: http://www.serversaustralia.com.au/colocation-servers-australia.php) but you can of course use any data centre.

I'm happy to donate it to a charity. Does anyone have an appropriate contact at a recognised charity such as the RFDS?

Great Idea,

Hope it gets a new home and it can be given back to charity.
