I'm not a fan either.
Sure for an opup to J it's acceptable but paying for a J seat on a 738 is crazy imho.

Yes, you know what ... the thought occurs that the strategy is really not to make money selling the small number of J domestic buckets for cash. Sure, they are for sale, but only to make your product lineup complete and to give us punters something to measure our points value against.

The thought goes that there is big money in FF schemes. No secret of course, but to ensure the pax keeping flowing those valuable FF points your way and not to the opposition you have to give them a way to spend those points .. something that the hoarders are going to use and enjoy, so it can't be too much of a token effort. So, why not reserve 3 metres or so at the front of the plane with decent, even if not excellent, amenities and services and allow the happy pax to burn away those points?

If true, its a happy business for everyone involved. The FF pax feel some love, the airline presents a full service to its codeshare and other partners and gains the market 'prestige' domestically because they offer full service. There is a handy outlet to burn off the points liability because despite being paid for them by merchants (coles, woolies, whathaveyou) they remain on your books and a liability until used ... so, find economical ways (for you) to burn them away.
