Jetstar has started pushing the $5 gift cards again.

Last Sunday I'd eaten before I got on the SYD-DRW flight and so I asked to use my $5 voucher (embedded in the extra fee to get FF points plus fare?) to buy the $5 scratch card.

I logged on to see what the $5 buys you - all overpriced and really quite rubbish. However, you can convert it to a $5 credit which can be used to discount a fare purchased within 3 months... My weekly commute just dropped in price (and I won't be eating a muffin or toastie just because it's 'free').

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm just dirty that they upped the kids combo (biscuit and drink) to $6 so no longer easy to use the $5 voucher  So I make it a point to pay the extra $1 by CC so hopefully it costs them more than that in wages, fees etc.

Yes I used to get the muffin + tea combo and now pay the $1 top up by credit card too.

I was really irritated when they upped the plus fares by 5 dollars and then gave a 5 dollar onboard credit... so at least until may there is now a way to back this back out.

I agree, the kids combo @ $5 was a winner, but @ $6 there is little value in that combo.

It means the only $5 options left (that I've noticed anyway) are an ice cream (not been available whenever I've wanted it, asked probably 6 times) and instant noodles. Bleh.

Lately if I'm with someone else, we combine our vouchers for the wine, cheese and crackers combo.

Guys. Paying with credit card is the airlines preferred option. It costs them maybe 2cents in merchant fees. Crew have to reconcile the takings and do all that paperwork anyway. But the card payment goes straight into the jetstar bank account.

If you want to cost them time you need to pay with cold hard cash. Then someone has to count it, probably 2 people have to count it, twice. Then it all gets collected together where some one probably counts it again. Then someone has to take it to the bank to be deposited in the account, probably with security staff as well. See cash money is the highest cost payment option. And since it is $1, you can legally pay them in 5cent pieces.

Just a little follow up...

Had the $5 gift cards offered on a couple of recent JQ flights. I don't really see the point in them, it seems like they're just trying to copy Ryanair. Having said that, the guy in front of me yesterday bought two, for some reason.

Oh, and the Kid's Combo is now $5 again. :)

Im confused, are they selling $5 gift cards for $5?

Yes.....

I don't really get it either. From what I gathered from the onboard announcements, they are scratchies that give you a chance to win a car. After scratching the panels you can redeem the $5 online. I don't understand the appeal personally.

Firstly..... Yay the kids combo went back to $5.

I noticed that it didn't last long at $6..... I think JQ were to ambitious with the price point & sales were negatively affected.

Secondly.... Your right in saying that JQ have taken a leave out of the book of FR's ability to drive ancillary revenue.
The way I see the $5 scratch card is that their is nothing to lose from buying one & one is presented with a slight chance of winning something more substantial when purchasing a scratch card. ( like any form of lottery I guess).

Earlier this year when I redeemed a $5 voucher..... I didn't pay the credit card surcharge for the remainder of the outstanding balance I noticed, so one genuine reason to buy a $5 scratch card on the plane I guess.

Although, I've been told JQ may have fixed this 'glitch' on their website.

I think the idea is that some people wont ever redeem the $5 so its free revenue
