I have to travel from OOL to PER rt and found by spliting my bookings and paying $52 more it get an extra 40 SC and use 100 less points to upgrade to J class

Normal travel would be OOL - PER $439 then PER OOL $477 and 14 900 points upgarde rtn and 80SC

What I booked and they are the same flights I would have gotten had I booked the above fares are due to a 2 hour transit time in Sydney. OOL SYD $139, SYD-PER-SYD $610 then SYD-OOL $219. OOL SYD Rtn upgrade 4900 points SYD PER rtn upgrade 9900 points total points 14800. total earn becomes 9680 points as a Platinum and 120 SC.

So is it worth it paying $52 for an extra 40 SC, mind you as I only have check in I dont need to collect bags and re check as they are seperate PNR's.

I would, especially if you need the status credits. I often split QF bookings for the same reason.

My review date is 25 aug and this trip will be for the start of my new Platinum year as it is on 28 Aug.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say you would be negligent to not pursue such a route ;-)

I could be way off the mark here but I thought you don't get extra status credits on VA domestic for separate sectors unless you stopover??

Don't need a stopover, just need to ticket them separately (ie make sure they are not a 'formal connection').

Thanks for the update, I always assumed ( wrongly) that there was no point in connecting with VA, this news means a re-think in some of my plans ;)

I booked OOL SYD OOL then SYD PER SYD. Not formal connections.

Definitely worth it. I have been doing the same thing on Qantas for many years....

Doesn't Qantas give you points/SCs per sector flown anyway? ie you don't need to book twice and pay extra?

I meant the $52 for 40 SCs is definitely worth it.

e.g. SIN-SYD-SIN maybe be something like $800 return but for a few dollars extra (sometimes less) one can route SIN-PER-SYD-PER-SIN for extra SCs. ;) Why fly direct when you can connect? :p

You could pay:
$149.00 and go OOL-MEL which would get 30sc's (since its just makes it into zone 2)
$610.00 and go MEL-PER-MEL which would get 80sc's
$149.00 and go MEL-OOL which would get 30sc's

Total $908 for 140sc's and then wait for a double status credit offer (which i hope will be soon = 280sc's) :)

Thanks for the initial thought!

Thinking of doing this for CBR-SYD-PER on VA.

What sort of minimum connection times should I allow? Am I safe to book what is offered on the web and then trust them to work it out if I miss the connection?

My connect times are 2 hours 30 for the outbound that is OOL SYD PER and inbound 1 hour 40 PER SYD OOL. Virgin state that the minimum connecting time (MCT) is 90 minutes.

The other issue is if you miss the 1.05pm A330 the next A330 ex Sydney is 2000. The 1730 depature is 737 800.

Do VA through check luggage when you're on separate pnrs despite it being same day travel?

Once upon a time they only would if all flights were booked at the same time on the same pnr.
