So I have 488,000 QFF points ... I know it's sacrilige but with the ever increasing taxes and fuel fines I find myself wondering if I should cash them in for $3,500 worth of woolies vouchers??
 
The main problems I see with Qantas and who can fix them seem to be:

Domestic competition: Virgin ... more or less foreign owned and funded now but is treated as an Australian airline. Government problem

High wages: average much more than competition because of Union power. Government problem

Qantas Sale Act: Unable to get much international capital. Government problem


The main problems affecting Qantas cannot really be controlled by them. I don't think anyone can blame the Board or AJ for these.

From the Media Release "Qantas International reported an Underlying EBIT loss of $262 million, compared to a loss of $91 million in 1H13".

Maybe that would have been worse if they hadn't entered into the EK JV, but it's clearly not the panacea thought back when it was announced...
 
Regardless how you look at it, by destinations NZ actually have a larger network than QF, that would make QF niche in many quarters! Especially as they serve three ports in Australia that QF dont.

That's true if you take into account the number of Australian destinations that they serve. But good on NZ in making them work.
 
Don't forget OOL too...

Does NZ fly to DRW? Can't see it on current schedule: is it seasonal? Not that QFi flies DRW either, does it?

Nope. It is not served by either NZ or QFi (scheduled or seasonal).

After they scrap Singapore that is it for Qantas in Perth internationally. I suppose they will shutdown the Q-Club and vacate the building!
 
At the point of getting dangerously off topic. I had a look at the Air NZ destination entry on Wikipedia and note that there are quite a few destinations that they have discontinued to serve on their metal which is interesting;

- BKK (now codeshared with TG)
- DFW (lack of feed perhaps)
- FRA
- MNL
- KIX (now charter only along with other Japan destinations); and
- SIN (resuming December 2014).

I will now get back on topic.
 
Just read that QF are cutting the PER-SIN route completely from 2015.

As a result, I can only assume that QF no longer want to support customers based in PER, therefore from tomorrow onwards, I am no longer going to fly QF international out of PER.

I will instead start earning loyalty points with SQ and have 3 options per day for flight times on PER-SIN. So by the time 2015 comes around, I should be PPS with SQ.

Come to think of it, why didn't I do this earlier?

I've got a booking for 2nd week of June PER-SIN rtn QF direct (QF77/78) but unsure if this is still scheduled or canx? Announcement suggests QF withdrawing from route 1st quarter 2014-2015, but these flights are missing from booking engine well before that.
I assume I'll hear from Qantas over the next few days if my flights are gone.....
Could have been worse I guess.

Actually you are incorrect here, SQ don't offer 3 flights per day on PER-SIN.

They offer 4 flights per day. The fourth, added last year, may have been the nail in the coffin for the QF services.
 
Qantas Perth-Singapore Services27 February 2014

Qantas International will withdraw from the Perth-Singapore route from 12 May 2014, due to poor commercial performance.

To cater for additional demand over the peak holiday season, we will operate a number of supplementary services. These services will operate as the currently published QF77/78 between 3 July - 21 July 2014 (with the same departure/arrival times and days of operation).

Western Australia remains a very important market for Qantas, and we will look for opportunities to run seasonal services on international routes when the demand is there.

Our new seasonal Perth-Auckland service added almost 8,000 seats over the busy Christmas and summer holiday period to what was a monopoly route. This was very popular with our customers and this is the kind of opportunity we’ll look to do more of in future.

Just read that QF are cutting the PER-SIN route completely from 2015.

Not 2015. It's the first quarter of 2014/15 meaning it will be gone by the end of September. In fact, a check of the schedules reveals 21 July is the death day for QF international in Perth.
 
I've been in class all morning, in fact still am but it's a break, and so far things don't look too bad. News reports were saying $300 million + loss and it's only ~$250 million. Plus international numbers are up, and other than JQ Asia making a loss, it's only QFi that also did and that was expected.

There was a blurb on one slide I saw that they mentioned a new lounge for BNE, presumably international as it was mentioned with SIN, HKG and LAX. I wonder if they'll finally be heading upstairs. But surely, if they're upgrading the lounge they must be looking towards expanding routes?

Will have to check the next 200 posts in a couple hours time when I get home.

Joyce just made a comment that due to NGCI, less troops required on the ground moving forward.

Funny when it was first introduced he stated that staff would be redeployed!

Perhaps that was the case when NGCI was rolled out, but now with their issues the plan has changed.

Don't they make more money off their store than on points spent on their flights anyway? So if you want them to stay in business it's actually a good choice.
