One of my pet hates is people who remove their seatbelts as soon as the wheels touch down. Do they not realise what dangers remain and what does it achieve? I secretly hope the pilot has to jam the brakes on hard just to give them a scare :evil:

Yep, those seatbelt signs are not there to piss you off or inconvenience you. There are there for your own safety. Stupid people be stupid people.

I believe turbulence does not have to be much to cause cabin havoc. The passengers and any other contents within the cabin were not moving because they had inertia. It was a sudden displacement of the aircraft - in this case down. It did not have to move a lot - just a change in in vertical velocity by > 9.8ms^2 for the seat to drop away from the passenger. (I think)

If they were strapped in they would have displaced with the aircraft.

Maybe JB747 or another pilot(s) can elucidate this a bit further - how much change in vertical velocity (acceleration) would be required to cause passenger head to contact overhead bin.

There's no indication that the seat belt signs were illuminated at the time, in fact the article suggests the opposite - no warning.

At 40 minutes prior to landing I would also expect many pax to be getting ready before the top of descent - visits to the WC and stowing personal items.

A casual read of local papers like 'The Border Mail', 'Sunraysia Daily' or 'Shepparton News' to name three of many fairly soon brings up people who do this - including on major roads like the Goulburn Valley Highway, Hume Freeway and so on.

No wonder some do it on aircraft: it's 'learned behaviour.'
