I particularly like the part that shows an evacuation with passengers standing up and leaving without baggage.

There is a $16500 fine in Australia (similar in other jurisdictions) for failing to comply with cabin crew instructions or endangering safety but I dont think anyone has ever been prosecuted by any jurisdiction for taking baggage down a evacuation slide.

It is the one aspect of safety briefing/reports that has never been enforced.
Until it is people are going to continue ignoring it.
A law is not a law if it is not enforced.

Maybe there should be an explicit law regarding taking baggage down evacuation slides. I suspect the legislators are not keen.....

Couple of observations on the new QF video… I would probably have shown the seatbelts fastened across the waist and hips rather than across the navel. And ‘do what our crew do’ for the slides… they show them sitting at the top of the slide rather than jumping. Although I suspect in an emergency people won’t have much of an opportunity to calmly sit!

Otherwise a refreshing change for short, sharp and simple.

Although I miss the ‘retro’ demo… ‘smoking is prohibited at all times, including e-cigarettes…. whatever they are!’

On a side note - maybe milehighclub can answer whether this has been considered? - the positioning of crew for the safety demo on the 737 makes it really hard for folk right at the back to see! I get they want crew at the overwing exit, but that means if you’re in the last couple of rows you’re up to 16 rows away from the demo! You can’t see, for example, how to tie or secure the life jacket.

Are the pax AI generated? Other than one guy in a foreground who looks very wooden, I thought they were a bunch of actors - or 'ordinary folk' told to 'look normal'.

They can watch the screens I assume. The 737's either have personal IFE screens or a drop down overhead screen every couple of seats.

In theory! But as I experienced on my flight, not always possible. Not all of them are visible, given their age, resolution, or the angle where you’re sitting. Plus glare from the outside

Good stuff. I thought it was odd that for a B737 safety video, they showed a twin aisle in many shots. And do any B737s have seat-back screens any more? Sure, its 'generic' past the intro (except for lighting down the seats ..), but dedicated cabins would have killed them?

Actually it's slightly different depending on the aircraft. I flew on an a330 today with the new video and it doesn't show a narrowbody in the video whatsoever

Hence why in declined multiple offers to move seats and probably why some guy must have received an upgrade at the gate to take the last J seat!

Disappointed, I really really wanted to know what the second Lachlan is up to, why he did what he do, and what location on earth is enchanting to him.

For me, I applaud safety videos focussed on just communicating safety, rather than incorporating all sorts of extraneous elements (celebrities, clandestine airline or destination marketing, ludicrous reconstructions of aircraft scenarios in locations other than aircraft, inclusiveness sops to airline employees etc) which do nothing other than cause airlines to spend unnecessary money on production rather than on actual safe flying.

As pared down as this is to previous QF efforts, it still blows me away how Japanese carriers like JAL manage to effectively cover all the required message in TWO languages in videos about as long as this new QF one:

Yes, but… at least initially I think the breakaway from the baseline was to get people involved so they were more likely to watch.

Frequent flyers might get bored with the longer versions, but first-time or infrequent travellers may pay more attention. And the relaxed pace of some of the longer videos gives people time to absorb the content.

I known when I fly on a new airline it’s interesting to see what they have to offer. So they have my attention, job done.

I was on an AA flight last year where they were doing a manual demo. When it came to the seatbelt bit the FA deliberately and loudly clacked the two metal ends together, before joining the two ends together. That got everyone’s attention, instantly.

And that’s what’s key.

People who need to hear the explanation the most are first time and infrequent travellers as well, which is actually why I think the more plot-heavy videos are actually better. While it's important for everyone to pay attention, I'd rather a frequent flyer miss the bit about life jackets than a first time flyer!
