2026 F1 Thread

So the next race with questionable decisions is going to see 22 appeals.
Maybe, but any team’s main challenge in appealing is not proving that the penalty was incorrect. Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code states that the team must first convince the stewards that there is a “significant and relevant new element” that was unavailable at the time the original decision was made. This was the only reason Alpine managed to have their appeal heard after the Monaco GP.

During Alpine’s right of review hearing, it was established that the distance measuring system used to measure pitlane speeds was “inaccurate and overestimated the speed” of Gasly's car. This was based on evidence provided by FOM (which is responsible for the timing system) on the Wednesday following the race, which means it was unavailable to the race stewards at the time. Alpine successfully argued that “the FIA and FOM, but not the Race Stewards, were aware in advance of the race that there was an issue with the timing loops in the pitlane”.

So sure, any team can lodge a right of review, but rarely does it ever go anywhere as there’s typically no “significant and relevant new element” that was unavailable at the time the original decision was made.

Back on Alpine’s appeal, it’s just gotten more interesting… ;)
