2023 - Year In Review

My biggest year since 2020 (I packed a lot in the first quarter before shutdown). But still well down on prior years.

Pretty fragmented - couple of bigger bursts; months with no travel and now settled into some routine short domestic flights.

Approx 40 flights. Schipol the only new airport from memory.

Highlights were returning to the F lounges in MEL, SYD and DXB, and international travel of course. Visiting family and friends. Returns to some favourite hotels where I've been well looked after over the years. 99.9% of travel staff encountered helpful and kind.

Lowlights a few delays and missed baggage (but overall I suspect I've fared better than most) and the 0.1%.

Best flights and greatest privilege a number of Emirates First class flights. Couple of years ago I didn't think I'd travel international again, let alone be in F cabins once more.

I actually have no idea and hadn’t really noticed. 🤔 I am away from the PC today but will investigate when I get home.
I believe it’s the number of times you’ve flown that route. Orange is once; red is, I don’t know, two or three; and purple is, again I don’t know - more than that.

@Scarlett the colours normally represent the number of flights on a particular sector. It starts an orange, then red, purple and finally black at 10 flights.
Thank you. That would therefore explain my total flights and my propensity for SYD/MEL-SIN in black.

Thanks @Matt_01.
I think the openflights method of keeping the same colour but increasing the thickness of the line is a little more elegant solution.
(but with over a thousand lines on my map it really is just starting to resemble a bowl of spaghetti no matter what method is used)

22 flights, 14 in business
New airlines - Cathay Pacific, Air Busan, Emirates, EuroWings, Lufthansa
New countries - South Korea, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro
New Airports - Incheon, Gimhae, Fukuoka, Dubai, Munich, Dubrovnik, Split

2023 was relatively quiet with only 24 flights, 18 domestic, 6 international. No new aircraft, airports or countries.

Happy ending to the year with a massage in the F lounge before my final flight on a JQ domestic run - thanks to a delay!

Who would have thought that it would be QF and JQ (in 2023*) that would come up with even better compensation for disrupted travel than the EU.

* To keep this slightly on topic.

I'll grow up now.

Just tidying up my figures for the year

97 flights
186,000km travelled
New airport - ZQN, MLA, ATH, JMK, YVR, YYC, SEA, LAX, CHC, JFK, HBA
New airline - LH, LX, A3, AC, AS, AA
New cabin - AA Transcon J
Longest flight - AKL-JFK at a short 15hrs 5mins according to the captain
Shortest flight - JMK-ATH
QF SC: 6000 (highest to date)
First experience: the Greek islands which I'll be returning to

My furthest year in terms of km travelled but not number of flights. Majority of this is in J with some EK F in there (hopefully more in 2024) and of course some unavoidable Y. As you can see, plenty of time spent in 737s so those EK F trips are certainly hard earned.

2024 will be a much bigger travel year for us than 2023. We will be grandparents and having sold our business we are likely to ge to the US twice and Europe twice with quite a bit of interstate travel.
it is now almost 10 weeks since my left knee replacement and I am expecting to be able to walk further every month from now.

Trips starting to pick up and got to 33 this year.
I am pleased to be on the downhill run to LTG which I should get in 2024-5. (Thanks to your assistance )
Looking forward to a DONE4 and a OWA going forward.
finishing 2023 with a Xmas in Hanoi with family and a really enjoyable lunch at Sofitel Legends there. Very festive day and the littlies loved it. Thank you all. It is a great community

Congratulations on all of that - selling a business, more travel, becoming grandparents and reaping the rewards of the work that goes into recovering from a knee replacement are all worthy feats!

A quiet year this year with only 10 flights, we didn't even make it to NZ.
No new airlines or plane types, but two new airports (HKT, MCY).
15,000 miles, or 24,000km

Highlight was SQ J to HKT, where I celebrated my 40th in Khao Lak. Still amazed we got four reward seats both ways.

Next year is already looking bigger with a a trip to Chicago locked in.

2023 has been a record year for me with 109 flights. It's been fun!

Happily, I visited quite a few new (for me) airports this year: CAI, KWI, AUH, ADD, MCY, PPP, CGK, KPO, TAS, SKD, SCO, LGW, HKT, ASU, BOG, CUR, TLL, VNO and finally BHK, where I flew into on 31 December.

Also a few new airlines flown for the first time: EgyptAir, Etihad, Bonza, Jin Air, Cathay Pacific, Uzbekistan Airways and Avianca.
