I am very lucky to of this year had enough points to take my parents (aka the seniors) on a bit of a bucket list trip. It’s not everyday that I or many people can provide a review of a 2 month round the world adventure. We had commenced planning this March of last year after months of talking about it. It was a prolonged night of screaming with brochures and maps at the ready to plan what we wanted to do (also trying to keep somewhat of a budget but as we all know budget and travel aren’t commonplace together) and also developing plans B-Z should QF not want to play ball with flights. In the end we established an ideal 10 flight, 2 cruise, 2 month itinerary - then the inevitable (3 and a half hour) call to Qantas was made and we ended up with a 14 flight, 3 cruise, 2 and a half month itinerary.

I started filling in the blanks that Qantas left me e.g. Dubai to Venice wasn’t happening on our O/W ticket without a LHR layover, so instead we ended up booking a Turkish Airlines flight via IST for AUD$295 in Economy. I also started looking at hotel options and ended up choosing and sticking with Starwood. They offered some awesome properties in some awesome locations in the cities we were going to so they were a no brainer.

In the end the final itinerary was as follows:

SYD - MEL - DXB QF J Class

DXB - IST - VCE TK Y+ Class

Hotel Danielli Venice - 3 Nights

MSC Fantasia 7 Night Greek Isles Cruise

MSC Preziosa 7 Night Western Med Cruise

MXP - CDG easyJet :(

Le Meridian Etoile - 4 Nights

ORY - MAD - MIA IB J Class

Westin Ft. Lauderdale Beach - 3 Nights

Oasis of The Seas 7 Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise

Element by Westin MIA International Airport - 1 Night

MIA - ORD AA Y Class

Westin Chicago Michigan Avenue - 4 Nights

ORD - SEA Y Class

W Seattle - 4 Nights

SEA - YYC AS Y Class

Our House in Calgary - During the floods!

YYC - YVR WS Y Class

YVR - JFK CX J Class

JFK - HKG CX J Class

Sheraton Hong Kong - 2 Nights

HKG - SYD CX J Class

I hope you enjoy the below. Please play nice guys its my first TR.

EDIT: Apologies for lack of photos for the first two flights. I had camera issues.

QF Chauffeur Drive

The day finally came and we were picked up in 3 different QF Chauffeur Drive cars as we were on 3 different PNR’s due to the 3 of us being on different SYD - MEL flights. It was quite a site to see the 3 beautifully polished and shiny cars on our drive (one Audi Q7, one 7 series, one Audi A6). I had somewhat orchestrated this knowing how Mommy dearest packs and also was interested to see if they would force us to all have 1 car. Thankfully not and I ended up with an Audi Q7 which apparently is normally used as the Emirates Wolgan Valley transfer car. The driver was over the moon about having me as his first job as it turned out he only lived about 2 streets away.

However this is where things got strange. The 3 of us left within 5 minutes of each other. We all followed each other down the M2 (We live in Castle Hill in Sydney’s NW about an hour away from the airport) and into the Lane Cove Tunnel. My driver informed me that he would be taking me over the Cahill Expressway and through the city instead of using the Eastern Distributor - I had allowed bags of time incase something like this delayed us as it was peak hour in Sydney of course. While Mummy dearest got the Harbour Tunnel and ED experience and Dad got taken over the bridge and through Pyrmont. It just seemed as it they were more trying to doge the tolls more than anything else. Naturally Mum got there first of course followed by Dad and then eventually me - almost an hour and 45 minutes after leaving home! I don’t know if the drivers are actually avoiding the tolls or what the story is, but its the slowest trip I have ever taken from home to the airport in 20 years. Something to keep in mind to allow time if you are using their services from Suburban Sydney to the airport.

QF 431
Seat: 3A

We all checked in upon our individual arrivals and all 3 had very different experiences. Mum checked in first and followed the carefully laid out instructions on what to do. However when she requested her bags to be checked all the way through to VCE, she was told that they couldn’t/wouldn’t do it for her. After pressing as much as she felt comfortable doing so, she gave in and accepted that we will get it sorted out in DXB. While Dad walked up presented both itineraries and was delayed while the agent had her supervisor do it - only luggage checked through no boarding passes issued from DXB. I on the other hand walked up and was giving boarding passes all the way to VCE, luggage checked thorough and even a flyer on transiting DXB. I don’t know if this inconsistency is the result in lack of training/experience or is just another QF inconsistency people aren’t bothered about.
After regrouping in the J lounge, we all boarded our flights. The J lounge was filled with a group of QF employees whom were being shown the product. I have no issue with this, but they were making so much noise that I couldn’t catch up on the news on the TV right in front of me or talk to the parents without raising our voices. I mentioned this as I was leaving the lounge and the lounge attendant seemed very indifferent and said “A huh. They are a rowdy bunch today.” Normally I wouldn’t care but that response and lack of apology did really annoy me beyond no end. My flight was on a factory fresh 738 and certainly felt better than the J class seat I had been in from BNE to SYD a week before. One thing that failed on this flight was the lack of being called Mr. mindthegap2154. It’s a small thing but in a elite cabin of only 12 names its not that hard to remember.

I was served a lasagna which I honestly preferred to the one I had in Venice the next day! It was one of the best meals I have ever had onboard a plane only recently topped by a chicken crepe in domestic J. I think its one of those things where they have done something simple and killed it rather than attempting some B.S. haute cuisine in the sky and failed miserably. I wish more airlines would attempt this style of J class service, especially AC and UA! It also had one of those "To heaven and back" cakes. OMG How much I love these. I wish you could buy them on a domestic scale.

photo-44aa.jpg (Apologies about the clarity)

I watched a couple of episodes of Family Guy while enjoying the view out the window and before I knew it we were descending. When the CSM was collecting the meal tray I mentioned to him what the lounge attendant said and he was very genuinely apologetic. He subsequently arranged to have me meet at the jet bridge in MEL by the lounge manager for MEL. He was above and beyond apologetic and escorted me through to the INT lounge ensuring I wasn’t delayed catching up to the seniors. He must of looked at my itinerary as he was giving me pointers on all of our destinations. He took my details and wished me a safe and pleasant trip and to let him know when I would be passing through Melbourne again. I was impressed with this attempt at service recovery on the day and was subsequently backed up by a call in Venice the next day - at 3am.

QF 9
Seat: 18A

After spending most of the night up before leaving for the airport, I was now a very tired boy and requested as I arrived in the lounge that my seat have the mattress made up when I had boarded. Despite a giant sign right next to the desk saying it was now onboard QF9/10 this was all a bit much for the boys at the desk and I eventually just gave up. I turned the corner to find the seniors relaxing with a glass of bubbly. Before I had the chance to say Moet a glass appeared in my hand. We toasted to a great trip and before we knew it they commenced boarding.

As we got to the gate my boarding pass was scanned and the death beep occurred. At the same time Dad had the same sound on the other podium. Mum was seemingly fine. We stepped aside eagerly awaiting to see if our seat number would drop to a single digit. But it was just a simple seat change as they want to seat a couple together. One of the problems of multiple PNR’s is that even though they are linked it doesn’t highlight that linkage to dispatch. The agent we were dealing with wasn’t the friendliest agent at MEL, informing us that I were to move me one seat forward and Dad 6 rows back. After declining this offer the agent we were dealing with seemed to be very put out and made us wait for an extreme amount of time. We are then handed back boarding passes for our original seats.

We get onboard sit down and this foil like substance starts falling from the A/C. I draw this to the attention of one of the flight attendants who asks us to sit in the lounge while he gets it checked out. The engineer gets onboard checks it out and gives it the all clear, however he doesn’t find a way to stop it. They ask if it would be ok to move me when we get in the air and I happily comply. We start to take off and a lot of this foil starts to fall. To the point that the crew come down and sweep the entire area. Dad and I get swapped out for a couple on staff travel.

In order to try and redeem themselves for the seat swaps, we are given a glass of the F bubbly and are told that should we like another to let them know. Don’t ask me what is was as I can’t recall now, but it was a beautiful almost honey like drop! I ended up having the new chicken turkish sambo option as my afternoon snack. Its ok but I found it exceptionally dry. The rest of the meal services were un mentionable and lacked anything overly wow. For the snack prior to our arrival into DXB I went for a “Emirates inspired” mezze plate. That was remarkable and tasty despite its small size.

The Skybed product doesn’t do a lot for me and at 6ft 3 I find it an awkward product. I just cant seem to find a great “lazy-boy” position. I did manage to get 7 hours of sleep however, which I guess is the greatest test of comfort on any airline flatbed. The movie selection was poor and I ended up grabbing another viewing of Django Unchained. If you haven’t seen it I must insist. I also enjoyed the music selections once again and managed to watch a Coldplay concert and some Modern Family.

We arrived into Dubai about 45 minutes late causing for a bit of a strain to make our connection. We found a member of the ground crew and made them aware of the situation , who promptly just made everything happen. Multiple radio calls were made and before we knew it we were on our own private bus to transfer round to the TK terminal. This transfer really impressed me and is making me reconsider using Dubai - I generally avoid it despite Mum and Dad having lived there for 30 years prior to returning to Aussie.

TK 761
Boeing 777-300ER
Seat 14K

Note: TK was one airline where I had heard very mixed reviews. I was a bit apprehensive about using them, but you only live once and well the price and schedule were amazing. I recommend everyone takes advantage of the service they offer.

After being bused around to the transfer desk, we are advised that check in has closed and that we have missed it. Well actually Mum has missed it and Dad and I are fine to get onboard. While I knew their would likely be a point in our journey that a situation like this would happen, I honestly didn’t expect it to happen on leg one. Dad and I briefly excited at the idea of forced time away from Mum, come to our senses and start asking what can be done. A few quick calls later and before we know shes onboard too and the three of us have been upgraded to Economy Plus. Score! Thanks to whatever QF agent in Sydney wouldn’t check us in for this upgrade!

We work our way through security and walk to the gate where we are the whitest faces on the whole plane. They commence the boarding stampede and we are escorted to the front of the pack and onto the plane. Talk about service! We are greeted by a very beautiful and pleasant inflight manager who proudly shows us to our seats. So far this level of service was heads and shoulders above what I have got onboard EK and EY and the same as QR.
We are seated away from each other onboard but this doesn’t matter. I fall asleep somewhere over Jebel Ali and wake up after the breakfast service has been served. One of the very attentive hosties (she seemed to be paying me attention above and beyond the normal) notices when she walks past and offers me breakfast, informing me I would have about 20 minutes to chow it down. I was starving at this point and happily agreed. Before I knew it there was the J Class breakfast in front of me and an exceptionally wide smile on my face. She even poured me a glass of bubbly without asking. A lady after my own heart I think.

3416162_orig.jpg (Was also given an omelette and the champagne in addition to what is shown)

Turns out while I had been dead to the world, Mum and Dad seated 2 rows back had been presented with a “wedding” cake and bottle of the good stuff. Said flight attendant had been apart of the presentation and found out I was their son. Mum and Dad were over the moon as their wedding anniversary was one of the reasons for doing the trip and thought I had a hand at this. It was actually my former boss who knew Mum and Dad quite well and had access to our booking. The line up of crew who came to congratulate them included the Captain, the Inflight manager and most of the crew. After I had finished my own special breakfast service, the hostie came back and gave a slice of the cake to try. It was one of the best desserts I have ever had. - even if it was 8 in the morning. I am actually considering having my birthday on TK next year just to get another slice it was that good.

The seat was soooooooooooooooo comfortable! It just seemed to support you where you needed it and was also great for watching a movie while grabbing a bite to eat - which is where most seats fail. I actually would happily fly in this seat for 14 plus hours, even though it wasn’t a flat bed it seemed to be just as good. A nice doona and big thick latex-esque pillow rounded out about 3 and a half hours sleep. I felt more refreshed after this flight than a recent SQ flight on their new A330 in J or the old EK birds that Virgin now have in J.

(Apologies about a lack of seat photos) However here are some stock photos from TK.

THY_comfort_class_05.jpg1244509365-turkish-airlines-2C09.jpg (Actually felt like I got more room than those photos)

All in all I can see how TK win the awards they do for their long haul. I honestly hope to travel with them again. If the rumors are true that they are looking to fly SYD/MEL - IST Non Stop I would happily use them as my carrier of choice to Europe.

We arrived on time into Istanbul, despite circling for half an hour. I didn’t quite grasp how quickly IST has expanded when I was looking online. What a place that airport has become. The transfer was easy for a place of that size despite lots of construction and the summer crowds. We had an hours layover between flights and made it to our next gate with 15 minutes to spare. The boarding gate our next flight was departing from was actually a remote stand. It was a 20 minute drive from terminal to plane, but Dad and I being plane buffs really didn’t mind. Mum on the other hand was wondering if we were driving to Venice.

Enjoying your report so far - keep up the good work! And what a lovely surprise for your parents too. A small gesture but very thoughtful.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I had a couple of people message me and ask me how old I am. I am 23 and my parents are in their 60s. Well Mum is turning 60 next month - the trip was a early birthday present. A lot of people while we were away found it interesting that I wanted to travel with my parents rather than say friends, frankly there aren't that many of my friends that really appreciate flying J or having a cigar and cognac on the balcony of a cruise ship in the Med. I have also become accustom to a level of luxury when I travel that can't normally be funded by their budgets - I am lucky that work for a company that has great travel benefits.

Anyhoo back to the report.

Apologies for lack of photos on this flight. It wasn't anything really different to a QF DOM Y flight!

IST - VCE
07 MAY
TK 1867
Boeing 737-800
Seat 4A

Making our way to what seemed to be the most remote stand at IST, we board a near new 737-800 for this 3 hour journey. We were lucky enough to be in the first row it was an almost full flight down back with 4 pax upfront in J including a couple from BNE. The legroom situation was similar to VA’s hard divider and as we all know provided a wonderful level of comfort.

This flight was a breakfast service and we were served almost the same full hot breakfast as per DXB IST. However this omelette was a touch better than our previous one. They were serving this traditional Turkish lemonade at this point too which was incredible! Sweeter than the traditional Southern American lemonades I have become accustom to, it was so incredibly refreshing. Try it onboard if you get a chance. Also offered was Turkish Coffee and later on in the flight a slice of marble cake.

Inflight entertainment on this short sector was via overhead IFE. It started off with a short travel program similar to getaway and finished with an episode of The Big Bang Theory and some British comedy. Short of a National Nine News episode you could of been forgiven for thinking we were back home on Qantas. I was more focused on the beautifully evolving landscapes below and paid attention to it.

The crew were friendly and also made mention of Mum and Dad’s alleged honeymoon. They weren’t as friendly as the previous sector, but I think this flight didn’t lend itself to showing that side of the service too well.

We landed in Venice 15 minutes ahead of schedule. I have a British passport (thanks Dad) so while we skipped down the EU line there was a decent backlog back to the gate for the 2 passport officers processing everyone else. Still better than Milan in March where I waited 2 hours in the EU line. I guess this is price of austerity.

By the time we cleared customs everyone’s bags were on the carousel. Frankly I have never been so relieved to see my checked luggage. I was sure that our luggage wouldn’t of made one of the connections but sure enough they all did unscathed! Double win!

We proceeded out to the private water taxi service I had booked for us. 110 Euro for the 3 of us and the bags. I was working along the lines that it was better after 36 hours flying to just get there rather than trying to find a cheaper alternative. I am very glad I did this as we were pretty pooped by this stage and it was also a rather classy entrance to a rather classy hotel.

Here are some photos of the water taxi and the transfer process.

Hi everyone,
Sorry for not updating quickly work has been crazy these last couple of days. Thanks for all your notes!

Hotel Danieli - A Luxury Collection Property (Starwood)
Their Rating: 5 Stars
My Rating: 5 stars for room and location 3 stars for service
Room Rate: 995 Euro a night excluding breakfast or taxes
Room Type Booked: Premium Deluxe Double
Room Type Received: Deluxe Lagoon View Double

After years of traveling around the world I don’t normally get fussed about a hotel, however the Hotel Danieli is a rare exception. We were greeted at the private water taxi door by the waiting bell boy (who in true Italian style rivaled the hotel in age) who promptly assisted the water taxi skipper in unloading our wonderfully light, yet slightly impractical Kathmandu duffle bags. (They really did look slightly out of place next to their Tumi and Louis Vuttion counterparts in the luggage room). Based on The Danieli’s Location, Prominence and known celebrity hang out status, the bridge immediately behind the water taxi entrance attracts a lot of sticky beaks trying to grab a look at what ever celebrity has just arrived. You could almost hear the disappointment from the crowd when the three of us emerged from the water taxi, despite this going by the amount of flashes going off, there was still a considerable amount of photos being taken of us as we entered. Oh to be rich and famous even if it was for 5 minutes!

We checked in and were informed that our rooms wouldn’t be ready until 4pm! We were so tired we just accepted it and sat in the bar that forms part of the lobby in this 14th century former palace. A few mirco-sleeps and a long check of emails, Facebook and a Red Bull (It was Mother’s first RedBull ever - that was an experience in itself) each later we mustered up enough energy to go for a walk and have our first taste of Venice.

WOW! What a place! It’s one of those destinations that you hear so much about, that your worried it won’t meet expectations. Venice in fact smashed them and has become my destination of choice in Europe! We spent the rest of the afternoon getting lost in the maze that are the streets of Venice. We eventually stumbled across a nice little whole in the wall Deli and picked up some prosciutto rolls. Whenever I am in Europe I can’t get enough of the cold cuts and stock up big time! Eventually we establish that we really need to shower as we are starting to smell REALLY REALLY BAD!!! We work our way back to The Danieli and are finally allowed into our room, comfortably set up for the 3 of us with a king single and an oversized king bed. We pay the desk clerk who takes us to our room - he wasn’t moving from the doors at 5 Euros, so we did our best to try and get him out of the room, by asking for additional towels - thanks for the tip AFF’ers!. Eventually he returns with our towels an hour later - glad we didn’t really need them.

The room was by far the largest I have ever had that isn’t a suite in Europe. With two showers, a bath, toilet and bidet it’s one of the best bathrooms I have been in. The sheets are a crisp 1500 thread count Egyptian cotton, perfectly ironed. A mixture of pillows graces the bed with a pillow menu placed next to the bed. The beautiful Murano glass chandelier hangs perfectly in the centre of the room. To me we are in hotel heaven. Before I know it the shower is running and Lady Mindthegap is screaming for my father’s assistance in working out the wonderfully awkward Italian shower head. Moments later and its screams of joy as she discovers the beautiful Hermes (I can’t remember what brand they were but Hermes rings a bell) toiletries. All are happy and very excited. I must admit I had ever so slightly question if its worth it - the 1000 Euros a night it was costing to stay there. As soon as that squeal was heard - I knew it was.

Properly attired we all agree to head to a restaurant we had seen on our walk. Down towards the Navy base that encapsulates the lower end of Venice island, we have a delightful meal and spend the rest of the evening walking the promenade back towards the Danieli and St. Marks. While Father and I retired to bed, her ladyship was feeling rather active (I think the Red Bull had failed to wear off at this point ;) ) and chose to go down to the pianist in the lobby.

It had been a little while since my parents had been to Europe and were required to fund themselves - they generally were on some form of corporate excursion previously. While certainly aware that it wasn’t a cheap place they were genuinely caught off guard by the pricing of things. We weren’t choosing overly fancy places either. I certainly did also try and warn them prior to travel, but hey you can only do so much.

We spent the next days exploring Venice and the various backstreets and attractions. We loved getting the Vaporetto tour of Murano, Burano and Torcello. What cool little places they are and made a decent 3/4 of a day tour for around 15 Euro each. While I did read up a little on the various things of Venice, I would recommend not doing this and just letting Venice take you on a journey. It also makes you pay attention a lot more to what you are looking at. You will be blown away by what you discover by doing this. Just make sure you have your wits about you as of course in any city, there are better parts than others.

Finally Sunday arrived and we were due to leave the Danieli for MSC Fantasia and our first 7 night cruise. As this was also Mothers Day we chose to have breakfast on the Danieli’s famed balcony. At 35 Euro per person I was expecting a rather high standard of cuisine, but alas the only high standard was the view. While everything was tasty and most of it fresh, there was no wow factor - not even an omelette bar!. However they did present us with a bottle of sparkling for Mothers Day which was a very special touch. We watched as MSC Fantasia sailed past us and presented her ladyship with her Mothers Day presents we had purchased on Murano the day before. We also did the Facebook tease to my brothers and sisters around the world. Lets just say jealous is an understatement.

Despite multiple attempts to get something to sign for breakfast, everyone just wished us a pleasant day. Oh well Starwood’s loss! We headed back to the room to get our stuff together for the ship and our waiting water taxi. We had enquired the day before about our options from the Danieli to the cruise ship terminal. The concierge advised us that we had three options 1. Private Water Taxi at 85 Euro 2. The Vaporetto at 20 Euro each or 3. A shared water taxi at 65 Euro each. Considering how much luggage we had we went with the private water taxi. I review the bill as we are checking out that had a 185 Euro charge for a water taxi on it in addition to 3 nights accommodation at 1150 Euro per night! When questioning both charges the man behind the desk throws his hands up and walks off. In the meantime our Water Taxi is waiting at the door with our luggage loaded and her Ladyship onboard. The manager comes our and corrects the bill - no apology or explanation offered. He proceeds to comment to the previous clerk in Italian who goes back to the office never to be seen again. At this point my father is now inside to see what the delay is. Turns out he gets the head concierge from the back who goes and gets the book for our water taxi booking. It clearly states the quoted 85 rather than the 185, however he then points to another booking in the book for 185 and goes “You did book the 185 transfer Mr. Smith” pointing at my father. The booking was in fact for a Mr. Copeland for which my father pointed this out. The concierge walks off in a huff. He hands me a copy of a new corrected bill that I sign. I thank him and he doesn’t even wish me a pleasant day. Who cares - I’m going on a cruise!

After enjoying zipping up the canal on the water taxi we reach the cruise ship terminal and the skipper demands 50 Euros for having to wait for us. We explain to one of the cruise line reps what occurred back at the Danieli. They apologize and manage to talk the skipper out of demanding this fee. What a day! The cruise line reps who met us at the drop off point quickly took our bags and loaded us onto a buggy for the 500 metre walk down to the terminal. Thank God I think after morning like that a drink was in order and walk not!

(Content moderated) Wake up mate, jump on a plane, get off the tourist traps, city hopping and really go to places instead of these places u waste your time and money on. Venice?? WTF, why would u even bother. These places didn't even exist 800 years ago, go to Asia, go to Africa, see Alaska, Svalbard, the Aurora Borealis in Greenland or Emperors in Antarctica.
