... awarded Halliday/Qantas epiQure Best Shiraz

No surprise to me. This is the annual Christmas lunch red at my place. This year we'll be on the 2003, so a few years to get to the 2012 ...:(

Edit: Now on sale for $825/bottle

You could try the 1990 Hill Of Grace at Aria in Sydney for $1500. That one has been my favourite vintage.

My love for Hill of Grace began about 1985, when we used to have a work "caucus" of a Friday at the Paragon Hotel at Circular Quay. There was a guy who had a grill in the back bar (like a concession stand) where you could get a steak done just how you like it, but the pub bar back then did not serve any wine, although they had glasses. So we used to go around to the front (Alfred St) and buy some wine. Usually a Phillip Hermitage or similar so decent but not all that special.

After we had been doing this for a few months the manager got involved and revealed he had a few wines out back that were not really what the general public came in for, and would we like to try some. Amongst these was a late '70s case of Hill of Grace. we polished it off over a few weeks, and there was some other very good wines that we cleaned out that year. But the Henschke was an absolute stand out and bought for only a dollar or two more over the also rans which included a Grange!

My own small supply acquired when the prices didn't exceed Grange, ran out a few years ago, and the last one was a 1993 - never ever had a better Shiraz or red for that matter! And the bottle shop where all this happened is now a McDonalds - oh for the good old days!

At a $1.10 a ml I will pass on the 2012.
My Hill of Grace affair started early 1974.We were in Adelaide where I did my specialist's exam.2 other successful mates + partners went down to the Barn McLaren Vale.We demolished 6 bottles I think of the 69 vintage. Not sure what we paid but I had a rule then of never paying $10 a bottle for wine.Enjoyed it so much I took another 6 bottles home.Got a few through the 70s but then it became popular and the price took off.

Same here, bought some when prices were sensible, now I doubt I'd consider it.

<snip>.

That's based on the current price. Buying off the 'friends' mailing list when released was I think half the current price (although relying on addled memory). So a bargain at $0.55/ml :) Although after Christmas lunch I remind my guests that the plonk they just had (usually HoG 15 years old) was about $100/glass, or about $150/glass in a restaurant.

I used to buy wine at Geoff K Gray auctions at Rosebery in the 1970's. I would buy Hill of Grace for about 10 bucks. Can't believe the prices now
