A really interesting article with a great graph of how the Asia-Pac region's airlines have performed. Poor people who had shares in China Southern / Virgin in 2008! And I find it amazing that JAL did (comparatively) well!

China Southern is Asia's biggest loser - followed closely by Virgin Blue: 2008 share price wrap

With a few days left to trade, 2008 will go down as by far the worst year ever for Asian airline shares. The reductions in equity valuations have been spectacularly severe, with five carriers reporting 80%+ share price falls and another five reporting losses of over 70%.

Japan has had a depressed economy for 10+ years so i am not sure if they had not really gained much hence less to loose ? not sure.

The Chinese airlines took a battering ! all of them. But i wonder how much effect the Olympics and visa restrictions had on them, they were having a bad time from what i could tell very early in the year, long before other countries.

2008 was just the tip of the iceberg. There is worse to come and one would have to assume that many airlines are not going to survive or have to resort to mergers or takeovers....
