Hello!

I have a 2 hr transfer around 7am at Melbourne airport (MEL), flying in on a QF international flight and departing on a JQ domestic flight. This is booked on a single (QF rewards) ticket.

I'm sure I will have to clear immigration and quarantine and recheck in my bag. Has anyone done this before and is it a rush?

Thank you.

It could be a rush, but as long as you like walking and don't have too much hold baggage it should be doable. As long as the flight is on time.

If its on one ticket they would move you to an alternative (unless you're going to a place with minimal flights).

2h is on the tight side. JQ Bagdrop closes 30min before flight so you have 1.5h and the walk from T2 to T4 alone is about 10-15mins. Overall doable, but you won't have time to dilly dally once bags appear on the belt.

Thanks! This is to SYD so there should be alternatives if needed. Would they put me on an alternative if the queues are long on the day even if the flight arrives on time?

Yes. Provided you keep yourself moving as a reasonable person would, you’ll be reaccommodated on the next flight.

If you decide to take a detour and spend time duty free shopping on arrival, or stopping to get breakfast, then no.

And listen out for any priority calls… they’ll often call people forward to skip the queues for flights that are closing soon.

We arrived at 6.20am today, along with 3 other international flights.
Very busy, long queues for customs/quarantine, perhaps also check what other flights are arriving at the same time @ffq
Better if nothing to declare obviously.
As others have said, don't dilly dally.
If flight is delayed, crew/QF SMS should have alternative flight details.
Good luck and let us know how you go.

Yes, have to clear immi and DAFF quarantine in MEL, pity you chose to go JQ for that next sector.
Dont leave your bags on the carousel expecting them to be moved to JQd for you, you have to diy.
If you had gone QFd, it would have been a bit tad easier.
But then, yeair, maybe there is QFd flight to your next Aus desto.

OP is flying JQ on that next sector, not QF!
Dont think JQ would care if its a late pax, due to late incoming int flight.

As it’s a on one ticket the airlines involved are responsible to get you to your final destination. It doesn’t matter whether it is JQ or any other carrier domestically. As long as it is all sold together. The passenger is entitled to transport to their final destination.

When doing QF-JQ at MEL

The only difference between QF-QF and QF-JQ with one ticket, is that the baggage will not be tagged to final destination with a QF-JQ

QF-QF and QF-JQ:
Collect baggage and do immigration, customs, quarantine

QF-QF
Turn left after exiting T2 international Go upstairs to T1 for QF donestic with your baggage

QF-JQ
After exiting T2 international, turn right, go past T3 (virgin domestic) keep walking to T4 which is a separate building Go to terminal 4 with your baggage

QF-QF
Check in your baggage it's already tagged

QF-JQ
Check in your baggage at T4 domestic. You need to re-tag your luggage. Checkin closes 30 minutes prior to aircraft departure.

QF-QF and QF-JQ
If you miss your flight and you are on one ticket, both airlines will accommodate you onto the next available flight

Is 2 hours adequate?
Yes if your inbound is on time and you don't have oversized baggage. I estimate it will take 1hr for the formalities, retrieving baggage and walking to T4. That means you should have about 30min to complete JQ checkin.

This is the Melbourne terminal birdsview map:
With baggage it should take no more than 15 minutes to walk from T2 to T4

Thanks this is great detail!

Unfortunately when I booked, QF wasn’t an option, I think it’s because they are all classic plus which I cannot use to connect to my classic rewards flight.

I can see that there are a lot more QF flights than JQ from MEL to SYD, anyone knows if I can ask for the next QF flight if I miss my connection?

You can, but more than likely you’ll be accommodated on another JQ flight.

If you miss your flight check your texts/emails/app for any replacement flights that may have been automatically assigned. If you’re not happy with those - for example there’s another flight leaving earlier - you can approach the JQ service desk.

You can ask but will they give?

Likely they will accommodate you on JQ if there is JQ availability but no harm in asking if there is an earlier flight if they put you on a later JQ flight.

I wonder though how this would be actioned
Do you go to T4 to ask JQ or do you go to T1 to ask QF? - could JQ service desk give you a QF flight (If your inbound flight is delayed and JQ sent you an email notifying your of changed flight).
