Hi All

Joining a few old dots together from 1973 (6 yrs old) and was wondering if anyone had some old timetables to confirm some routes.
Flew SYD-LHR with BOAC in a VC-10. Recollections of Sydney-Melbourne-Darwin-Singapore-Jakarta??-Abu Dhabi??-London.
Flew LHR-SYD on a QF 707. Only memory of stops was Tehran (with a row of F4 Phantoms on the side of the runway), Jakarta and Singapore.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Was the Abu Dhabi stop perhaps Bahrain instead?

The earliest I have is 1976. QF was routing via Bahrain at that stage for ME. By 1976 Jakarta was not connected to Europe and was only standalone (connections to Asia and Australia).

I have some Qantas timetables from the northern summer of 1974.

I'm not sure about the SYD-LHR flights with BA in the VC-10, but according to my info QF offered 10 different routes using a mixture of 707s and 747s in 1974.

Perhaps the outbound routing was SYD/MEL-DRW-SIN-KUL-BAH-FCO/AMS-LHR?

Coming back in the 707, it could have been one of these routings:
LHR-ATH-THR-DEL-DMK-SYD
LHR-DAM-THR-DEL-DMK-SYD
LHR-THR-BKK-SYD
LHR-THR-CMB-KUL-SYD
LHR-ATH-THR-DEL-KUL-SYD

Thanks all

docjames - may have been Bahrain. There wasn't much to the airport in those days. I remember a control tower, a terminal and alot of sand.
Mattg - the LHR-THR-CMB-KUL-SYD may have been it as Colombo rings a bell.

Cheers

My father got "stranded" in BAH for almost 3 days (aircraft inop) on the way home around that era. So i'm reasonably confident it would be BAH but hopefully someone's timetable can actually confirm.

We did the trip in early 1972, and it was Gatwick, Bahrain, Singapore and Perth. Bahrain seemed to be the hub back then. And it wasn't much more than a runway and sand - and hot compared to the UK

In January 1974 flew on a QF 747-238 QF 731 VH-EBA SYD-SIN-KUL-BAH-FCO-LHR. The return (August 1974) was QF2 on VH-EBC LHR-AMS-BAH-SIN-SYD. Still remember some of the names of the pilots on the flight/s. Capts Henderson, Quinn, Richardson, Christensen, Clark, Fox...

Without wanting to high jack the thread is anyone aware of the 1976 (June) QF flights SYD-LHR. I was 8 at the time from what my farther told me it was a 707 SYD-PER-BOM-LHR. Been looking for 1976 timetable, without luck, and cannot seem to find that QF route on the web.

Did I'd such a route exist and if so does anyone know the fight number. Maybe my farther has just become a bit forgetful.

From memory back in the 70's (not 100% correct) there were a couple of routes to LHR: 1. SYD-SIN-BAH-LHR; and 2. QF7 that went SYD-PER-BOM-LHR...

So my 1976 timetable begins 1 July, QF 7 was operated by a 74B, routing MEL-SYD-PER-BOM-LHR. Maybe the change from a 707 occurred with the new timetable from 1 July?

Throw in a few more stops and it would be a great way to go to Europe.

Wow, this is fascinating, even though I never flew any of these routes. It never ceases to amaze me what can be found on the internet and what people have kept over the years.

In 1979 on my first o/s trip as a young teen I flew SYD - LHR, stopping at SIN and BAH as well as Damascus where we remained on the plane with a few soldiers making sure we took no photos out of the windows. A few passengers got on and off, but I recall one QF flight per week had to stop as condition of flying over Syrian airspace. Wouldn't like to do it now!

Some flights were still going via BAH in the 80s. I had a QF route map on my wall as a kid and remember seeing BAH on the network (to Europe).

It's funny you should ask that question. I did the same a couple of days ago on another site and got an almost instant reply. We flew from Darwin on Saturday 3/11/73 (then only flew through DRW on Saturday) and the route after that was KL, Colombo, Dubai then LHR. It was on a BOAC (or had it changed to BA by then?) VC-10 (flight number BA729).

Maybe we were on the same flight!

I'm trying to find out the itinerary for our return flight in early Nov 1973. We flew Qantas in, I think, a 707, from LHR to SYD via Tehran (I also remember the Phantoms!) but am stumped as to the others. Hopefully someone will know the answer.

if you are after some historic flight schedules for QF, have you contacted the QF Heritage centre at all ?

i did, and was sent a copy of a 1982 flight i did coming back from LHR, via LAX and PAP.

they were very helpful.

Many thanks, Gold60. I'll give them a try. The joys of ageing!
