Who is qantas kidding it is only 38,000 points if I redeem.

Question though is domestic business class worth it?

I don't fancy travelling in Y for 5hrs though

It's usually cheaper to fly J PER-SYD-AKL than it is just PER-SYD

It's a very strange world!

Find a business class award seat on a suitable date, pay for a super saver fare (~ $450) on that flight and then apply for an upgrade to business class (16,000 points) as soon as fare is ticketed ...

The route is has a 767 which is a lovely flight in business class and lots of upgrade availability.

You get frequent flyer points and status credits etc ...

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

1. Look for an available business class award fare on Qantas Frequent Flyer from A-B
2. Pay for a super saver fare on that flight (ie upgradeable fare - must not be red e-deal.)
3. Wait for email confirming fare has been ticketed.
4. Go to "Your Bookings" in the Qantas Frequent Flyer website.
5. Click on the "Upgrade" icon next to your booking.
6. Confirm deduction of points and you are done !!

All business class fares, upgraded or not, have complimentary Qantas Club access.

Making sure that 1. and 2. are the exact same flight

In my experience, the availability of an award business class seat on a flight does not always mean a successful upgrade.

I've always believed that they come from different buckets.

On domestic flights, if there is an award flight available then you will be able to upgrade as long as you are not on a red e-Deal.

For domestic flights, Business Class Flight awards and Upgrade awards BOTH come from the U fare bucket.

Don't muck around after booking that supersaver before upgrading. Note the domestic upgrade will be immediate if successful.

Interesting just looked up PER-AKL and only $1666 that is very wired.

Qantas has J class competition on PER-AKL with AirNZ's 767 service.

Last time i looked AirNZ was about $1800 but nonstop, so i guess Qantas has to compete with that.

In my experience Qantas will "hold" an award seat while waiting for ticketing for WP members. As soon as I have booked it. I phone the call centre and ask them to upgrade my ticket. The points come out straight away. The U class invintory drops by 1 (Ie goes away in Classic Awards if only 1 seat was available). My Booking only shows "S" Economy for several hours. Usually the next day I look at it and it then shows "U" Business.

I am a WP, YMMV

QF domestic fares booked in I class are significantly cheaper than those in J class (BNE-PER OW currently $1300). QF often only release these seats within about 60 days of departure, so it can pay to hold off if paying for the fare rather than using points (although make sure to keep an eye on the departure day to avoid the higher fares booking out).
