Back in 2008 I posted this thread 16 sector DONE4 ex JNB for a similar topic as this one, but with a few diferences.

Back then I didn't do it as a JQ *C 2for1 deal came up to HNL and other things just seemed like a better option.

So I have never done an ex JNB before, so looking to more upto date information. I have normally nested a few point-to-point J tickets ex TPE for my travels and they have served me well. How ever a NET of $6,381 for a DONE4 ex JNB seems like something I can't pass up.

The route I am looking at is jnb-doh-cdg-hel-mad-dfw-anc-dfw-ord-jfk-cun-jfk-syd-per-drw-syd-jnb for 48,146 miles.

I only really need to be in ORD for a very important interview (GRB actually) the rest is just fluff. ie CDG in early AM out late PM and a train ride into the city. Overnight in HEL just for the fun of it. Rest of it is Turn around or overnight where I have no choice.

Due to ill health, I have been a little out of the game and I know changes have happened re YQ. I believe AA is is not longer the great YQ killer they once were. I am looking for tips and tricks on perhaps maximising the miles on this sucker and also sneaky ways to keep the taxes and "carrier imposed fees" to an absolute minimum.

Looking forward to your interesting replies.

I tried to do this for a work trip, however getting to JNB for the positioning flight is difficult unless you are prepared for a long flight in Y

no J award seats and $5500 return for J or $5000 one way.

ok I see you are Perth based, that will help, I was looking ex SYD

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

How about DFW-ANC-DFW-CUN-ORD-LAX-JFK-SYD, in order to reduce the time spent in J (to and from CUN) and maximise F, and cut-out a 'wasted' return to a city you've already been?

Thanks to this forum we purchased a DONE4 jnb-lhr-vce-lhr-yvr-dfw-lir-dfw-jfk-lax-mel-bne-mel-syd-jnb in June,on an AA ticket from Mindpearl for $7400 AUD each...We are using an ASA award J ticket ( U class of course !! ) mel-syd-jnb to position and planned well in advance to secure these 2 tickets....Rang AA in Dallas for a quote...easy as and then phoned AA in CapeTown a few days later and paid with my Oz CC and again easy as...e ticket was issued 24 hours later....Spending the night at the Intercontinental as dont want to risk a misconnect especially with the first flight.

The IC JNB airport is very nice and convenient for an overnight transit. The food in the hotel restaurant is reasonabaly priced and quite nice with various African game meat available.

Thanks kpc..thats what I have been led to believe so thanks again for the confirmation:)

That's a great idea. Thank you. I'll play with that a bit.

I believe that's over $1,000 in "taxes" I know lhr will have a bit, that why I avoided it. Even though I miss out on BA's new 380. I really am hoping to lower it a bit.

one world upped the prices in many of the "exotic" locations around Aug. 2013 and ex-jnb went up by about $1500 before we booked....Hoping that the price doesnt move again :)

TA came back with $6381 , taxes $1734.70. QF plated. Asked for a requote on AA.

I don't know what changes have occurred re YQ since my 2010 DONE4 but IIRC my 'savings' on +++ using AA to ticket were significant (cannot recall exact figures). Will be interesting to see what your TA comes back with.

I just got this. I find it a little odd.

Yes used to be AA was much less for tax but have checked taxes with AA, QF and QR - all the same.

My actual cost from AA was 67400 Rand with 2700 Rand in taxes at today's rate this equates to approx. $6912 plus $290 in taxes...slightly cheaper than when I purchased due to the change in the exchange rate....hope this helps

Well, I have modified the routing to Great Circle Mapper It is just over 50k miles. Not bad I think.

I have called the AA RTW desk. They are pricing it up for me now. Interestingly on the QF MMB page I can request Dubai Connect. That is nice. Not something I expected due to ruling
The itinerary must be a single booking and ticketed on one ticket. The ticket must be issued on an Emirates (176) document or a Qantas (081) document.

I am anxious to see what comes back as EF show the fare as 58,940 Rand net.

Can back very confusing. Off to sleep look at it more in the morning.

I've since spoken to my TA in PER and she has sorted it out for me magically and arranged for BA in JNB to process payment to avoid paying AU pricing.
