SYD-MEL (# 4) and SYD-BNE (13) make the cut.

I think SYD-MEL has been as high as #2 in the past, so I wonder if it is not as busy as pervious years or others are now busier?

How busy the route is also depends on other options available as well, this list is airport to airport not city to city, as city pairs like; LA to San Francisco could have more people traveling but you have options, in LA you have LAX, ONT, BUR, LGB and on the San Francisco end you have SFO/ONT/SJC, same with New York to anywhere you have, JFK, LGA, EWR, and London you have, LHR, LGW, LCY, STN, or LTN, I hope not to confuse anyone with airport codes.

In Sydney there are no other options, in Melbourne you might have Avalon, and Brisbane you have Gold Coast but there is only one Sydney airport.

It depends how they define "busiest". There are many ways do do so (which is part of the reason there are a half dozen or so airports that keep claiming they are the "busiest" all at the same time).

Mel-Syd is 3rd by aircraft movements and 5th by passenger numbers:

I guess that because they are predominantly B737 flights the capacity and passenger numbers are reduced slightly compared to some routes with larger aircraft.

Agree, when ever I hear the busy route story I'm always interested what the methodology is for selection.

It's easy for two cities of around 4M each to be high when there is effectively only one airport at each end. (sorry Avalon)

Bundy, you forgot one; LA also has John Wayne which takes commercial flights from 6 or 7 airlines and even a lounges for UA and AA.
