Well done suparockin.
Now you're hooked. There really is no going back IMHO :)

Congratulations Suparockin!

I also flopped over the line for Platinum for the first time with 1410 SC's back at the end of August. It was also a flight from AKL that put me over, courtesy of the free Qantas flight from the airline shutdown.

Have suffered some ribbing from the family who are keen to highlight the "W" in WP. A visit to the Flounge in Sydney and the benefit of being able to book some excellent seats have since tempered their teasing.

Its been done without any DSC's apart from a one off to OOL earlier in the year. Thanks need to go to the generous help and advice from those who contribute to the forum, without which I'm sure I never would have gone past Gold.

Of course they never warn you how addictive AFF is, along with the pursuit of status credits and FF points.

Hope you enjoy your new status as much as I have :D

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Just hit Platinum on Monday after my last flight from Singapore and saw the DSC offer. Get my first DSC offer when I need it least. Bugger.

Had my first flight today as a WP travelling SYD-OOL in economy with the family. What a let down. Being my first flight in cattle class in a year, I had made sure I had selected exit seats when I first booked the flight a few months ago and confirmed the seats last night. However when I got onto the plane found I had been switched to a standard seat with no explanation when I checked in. My daughter and I were jammed in next to another traveller even though there were several vacant rows and plenty of rows with just one passenger. Maybe the two pax in the exit seats I thought I had selected were P1s but I thought it was pretty poor. Flying in J as a PS or SG I have always been greeted by name and looked after. Nothing like that in the cheap seats, even as a WP. Don't expect much out of my status, but being able to fly in the seat I had selected unless there was a good operational reason for the change is a basic expectation for me, or at least an indication that I had been bumped to another seat and why would have been nice. Coupled with very ordinary service, I'd rate my first flight as WP about 2/10.

I have exit seats selected for my return flight next week. Won't be a happy camper if it happens again.

Are you sure there wasn't some sort of equipment change - I find on the Canberra Sydney run I often lose exit row seats because of that - the seat numbers don't seem to change but where the exit row is does. In fact I got so sick of losing them I started flying J even though it is a bit silly to do so for such a short flight.....

Nope, they only use 737-800 winglets on the SYD-OOL route. Not much use complaining to Qantas because seat selection is not guaranteed. I get that, but my point is that being WP did not result in any better treatment or perks if this is typical.

I have found this type of experience as anything but typical. Since becoming a WP I have had 4 flights with QF on economy tickets. On three of the flights I was offered free wine including a glass of wine from the Business class cart. On one leg I paid for my economy wine and was handed the money back. On the leg from Brisbane to Cairns I received exceptional service - a special greeting and my glass was repeatedly filled with wine from Business class trolley (much to disgust of the woman sitting next to me). I suspect I will be disappointed if I am ignored and have to pay for that awful stuff in the plastic bottles - but on the other hand I will continue to appreciate the great service when I received it. I spoke to a FA the other day who told me some WP get quite annoyed when they are acknowledged.

Good to hear you got such good service, which makes my experience all the more disappointing. What really frosted my apricots, more than anything else, was the coughpy seating arrangements, as I always make sure I get the best seats I can at T-80. The only reason I can think of for the two people who ended up in the seats I thought I had is they were higher status - I couldn't observe any physical or mobility reasons that would account for being bumped in their favour.

Just made WP for the first time. Happy to be joining the WP club.

Found points and SC would register within days of flying F on AA. Took a week for discount Y to register.

Not expecting much as a WP on my first flights. MIA to LAX and then onto HNL on AA. Then HNL to MEL on J*.

J* offered upgrade to J on promotion for 250 USD. But figure would be better to put cash towards a pair of Boise QC 15s. Seen here for 269 USD in Bestbuy machines.

Well done Kiwi, I joined the WP rank 6 months ago, I can say Mrs lime sure enjoyed the 1st Sydney lounge and those brilliant CX in HKG.

Reminds me of economics (Econ 101) studies at uni...preferences and choices.

Thanks Steelo, I read that last bit and couldn't help but have a great laugh (just what the doctor ordered!). It's funny that happens, it's just wine after all (not like you were lauded with pearls and diamonds), but I guess some people are strange.
