Expiring KF miles

Aside from the 1,200 mile fee to extend points by 6 or 12-months, is it possible to book a fully flexible flight as far in the future as possible, with the intention of cancelling it later, just to prolong the points expiry?
 
Correct, miles retain their original expiry date even after being used. So when cancelling any that would have expired by the day you cancel will automatically expire
I think you can change the booking rather than cancelling it, as long as the change doesn't require the ticket to be re-issued. The articles below might help.

But if you don't have a specific destination or flight in mind, another option would be to transfer the points to Velocity. Yes, they'll lose quite a bit of their value, but at least you won't lose everything.


 
Yes, I have certainly changed tickets in this scenario, including in one instance well into the future ( ie beyond the normal 11 months of the original booking). I did have to talk to a supervisor though.
