So much to my annoyance my friend in London who I was going to house sit for in June/July for 2-3 weeks has given up his flat and heading back to Oz. I had planned to just chill for a week but never mind there are other places to explore and last minute bookings in London are a little expensive. I don't want to spend all my earnings on hotels.

So after I finish work in Mid June I'm looking for a town or smallish city that has lots of good restaurants, pubs and bars that I can walk to. I don't want anywhere remote that I will need a car to do anything.

I've travelled through a lot of UK but can't think of somewhere that fits these criteria so if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful. I may find some contenders but the other thing I want for that week is nice self contained accommodation so they may not be compatible.

Oxford or Cambridge come to mind.
Term finishes 21 June this year so imagine they'd be more accommodation around afterwards
York or Bath could be good too
Well-connected, interesting sights and though I haven't visited recently, I reckon they'd be decent restaurants

Thanks - it is many years since I went to Oxford so that's a good suggestion. I've spent time recently in Cambridge, York and Bath but haven't discounted them

I used to live in Brighton and liked the feel of the place. If looking for somewhere smaller, maybe Canterbury
Thanks keep them coming - Brighton sounds nice. Haven't been to Canterbury since 1982
