New tiers = someone gets devalued. Less than 0.5% of frequent flyers have top-tier status, and even fewer % are in that ultra-top tier. If anything - alliances could introduce a new lower tier.

The lesson here, and with *ALL* airline loyalty programs - SPEND THE MILES! Don't save them up for 'that one big trip in X years'. Don't warehouse points in an airline/hotel program thinking they are 'safe'. Always spend them at the earliest possible opportunity.
