There is nothing in the T&Cs (AFAIK) but in practice there appears to be a limit of 2 surface sectors. I've never been able to get QF to ticket a OWA with more than 2.

Yeah either actually. But lack of availability on the SYD-JNB leg means that the option to combine with a QF longhaul isn't available. The flights are available using Avios through QR but the points + taxes works out to be dearer than the cash fare..
