    Nostalgia

My flying memories go back to 1946 when I was a six year old lad. Our flight was to be from Melbourne to Hobart and we were to depart from Laverton as Essendon was being rebuilt. On day one we arrived at the scheduled time to find that THE PLANE (a DC3) was having engine troubles so it was back...

Many thanks Hvr for this fabulous series. This is a great start for what I hope will become a popular thread.

Arriving at Sydney on a Sunday afternoon. Note the attire of the passengers. The aircraft is a Lockheed Electra introduced by both TAA and Ansett in 1959. I found the Electra a most pleasant plane to fly in and fast - Melbourne to Sydney in an hour. Unfortunately the aircraft had a flaw in its...

Remember these? Both are taken in Franklin St Melbourne. You checked you luggage in, got a boarding pass and you had time for the bar when you arrived at Essendon.

It would be good if we oldies can swap yarns and pics of what things in the old days. Remember when planes had things on the wings that went round and round? Remember when you got dressed up in a suit to travel by air? Remember when you got a three course meal in economy between Sydney and...

Not long ago on TV I witnessed the Plane Eater! This monster gobbled up a passenger aircraft in about 3 minutes, seats and all. The shredded product was spat out the back into a waiting truck and taken to a sorting station.

Anybody with any experience getting wiped points reinstated?

Just to clarify my points position: I gain points each month by booking things up on either my ANZ Visa or ANZ American Express (more points per dollar). It is a couple of years since either redeemed points for a flight or earned points by flying. I get a monthly email giving me my points...

Ovation of the Seas, and a few flights along the way.

A nice shot departing Dubai. Isn't that the QE2 in the background? She was sold about 10 years ago, I am glad to know she is still afloat. I enjoyed one of the last trips on the old girl from Dubai to Southampton.

    Transferring QF Club Membership

Re: QF club Membership Hi to all who have replied and thank you for your unanimous advice. I transferred all my wife's points a little while ago (before she died) so this is done. It looks like her Qantas FF membership will be interred with her remains. No more free booze and comfy seats for me...

    Transferring QF Club Membership

My wife passed away two weeks ago and I am now getting her affairs sorted out (a rather large job). She has held a life membership of the Qantas Club for over thirteen years and my question is there any way this membership can be transferred to myself. I have been an FF member for this time...

Seeing this very detailed Hobbit artwork has given me an idea - what about engaging a mural artist to paint the outside of the fuselage with what's inside. In other words a sort of an x-ray view.

    Ask The Pilot

I seem to remember several nasty situations where a smaller aircraft followed too close behind a B747. The wing vortices rotated the air with some force and following aircraft risked rotating as a result, in fact I think several did, even a 737. There are strict separation rules now when flying...

    Ask The Pilot

As seen on YouTube landing an aircraft in a high cross wind looks pretty scary. The flight path has the aircraft crabbing as it approaches the runway sometimes it appears to be over 30 degrees to the centreline. Then as the aircraft makes contact with the tarmac it is miraculously straightened...

    Ask The Pilot

I think the airlines were going to levy a fat tax at one stage. With seats down to 17 inches wide and pitch down to 29 inches some aircraft are only intended for Jennie Craig success examples.

    Ask The Pilot

Perhaps airlines need to charge passengers by the kilo they weigh just like they do for airfreight.

    Ask The Pilot

How do they weigh an A380?

    Ask The Pilot

The question of total aircraft weight is obviously vital. Do aircraft have an inbuilt mechanism to measure all up weight, like load cells over the wheels?

Can you get a shot of this? I guess you could post it here or on the plane spotting thread

I understand that the universal ATC language is English, however I expect that in some cases the English would be almost unintelligible. Would a Russian pilot be required to use English when approaching a domestic Russian airport? Do you ever have trouble interpreting instructions from an ATC...
