Yes indeed, and I always take my laptop bag out from my carryon and have it scanned separately, wherever I am in the world. Even so, it goesn't always go well. Some places just need to find something.

If it were me, I'd go for the longer layover (which you could spend in the Qantas Club I expect). All it would take is a delay with the incoming aircraft and you'd be in a spot of bother.

That's very interesting and I can relate to it, sort of. My mother had a Central Europe surname (fairly unpronounceable), but my father had a good old Irish surname. It's also interesting, that my son and daughter both married people with common Irish surnames.
