Pre-COVID (hence pre-admin) both Gold and Platinum got access to the Brisbane-based call centre. Now it's just "welcome to Velocity Premium" with a Filipino accent. Seems to be better than what it was 12 months ago, but YMMV.

OOL is almost always cheaper than BNE, just less frequency.

Considering that you're going to have to spend points on the flight (and they'll know who you are) there's always the possibility that VA could potentially penalise/suspend your account. Having said that, slightly bizarre on a points flight that there is availability via BNE - but not direct -...

Having just flown BNE-SFO and LAX-SYD, I found that it was a case of checking daily, generally best checked after midnight Chicago time for J availability. Managed to obtain BNE-SFO about 3 months out and LAX-SYD about 6-8 weeks prior. As always YMMV.

I've found that calling the Marriott directly has yielded good results for me in the past. Don't think they publicly list the emails for the individual hotels at this point.

Having said that, if your purpose was Platinum renewal then re-route via MEL shouldn't be an issue...extra SC's, although yes, extra time.

My understanding is that award flights for UA in Velocity can't be mixed class - you'd have to book it as two separate legs.
