Has anyone had a positive experience on a long-haul narrow body aircraft? I keep seeing reviews of Iberia's A321XLR long-haul routes and they uniformly complain about the many compromises that have to be made compared to a wide body (eg this business class one & this economy class one).

Not necessarily. Because anyone with access to BA/IB/AY/etc as a transfer partner has access to QR because Avios is a single currency. And you can easily buy Avios.

I'd say Cathay is probably the better option because fewer Australians have access to Cathay miles than Avios, and they are generally good at releasing availability to their own members, but it comes in waves and is not guaranteed.
