OK, well as I said...Velocity does not have rolling points expiry...so there is no situation that could cause SOME of your points to expire and not others...so the original inactivity explanation is incorrect.

Velocity points do not partially expire....either they ALL expire, or none expire. So there's no scenario related to expiry that would leave you missing some points...unless when you say you were "short" you mean your balance was zero.

The only VA partner where I think last minute business class availability seems to be "a thing" is I think, United...although with Etihad now limiting partners to booking business class 30 days out...perhaps this a new opportunity...haven't really checked. For QR and SQ...you will probably be...

You are proposing to have 1 VA ticket and 1 NZ ticket...so that will never happen. Neither ticketing carrier will touch the other's ticket...assuming that they even have access to be able to manage it.

They're not going to protect you from delays and misconnects on separate tickets. The best you can hope for is bags being checked through, which as mentioned is also doubtful.
