    My experience with VA has consistently been that the card fee is not refunded, and this is across different card issuers and networks. FWIW, the fare and the card fee appear as separate transactions as part of the original purchase. The refund amount matches the fare charge.

    Can you potentially capitalise on this and move the final segment to a future date after you arrive in Melbourne? Even with a change fee it still makes for an almost no cost one way domestic J ticket!
