Has happened to me once. QF weighed our cabin bags at check-in at LAX in Feb 2011. I was over 7kg so had to decamp some stuff to a checked bag. The Samsonite roller cabin bag I'd just bought weighed 4kg empty (!) so I just use it for domestic now. Maybe about to be unsuitable even for that.

That's not correct. I've put more than the limit on my card several times but not in one go though. I'd pay the 5k in a few installments, paying it off immediately and if its going to be regular thing get a limit increase.
