They will 100% open a DFW or LAX seat if a paid seat is available. You just need to reach the right person. Getting from either to JFK is another problem. The other option is goto LHR on Qantas and then into JFK The SA call center is unless. Do they even provide any training?

Qantas will open up LAX or DFW if a paid seat is available. They did this for me. The only issue is that AA have almost zero awards available (even via connecting cities) to JFK/LGA
