    Back to Japan and Korea

Hi Matt_01. Enjoying your trip report. Did you find the visit to the castle grounds still worthwhile, even without the castle? We are in Japan in late September and were thinking of visiting Kanazawa. Obviously the castle is not the only thing worth visiting, but it was something we were looking...

China Airlines reward seats using Qantas points

Here's what I noted upthread about my experience I was eventually able to select seats for the TPE-KIX leg, plus also later bookings I made from NRT-TPE-BNE all on the China Airlines site. All my selections were prior to the change which (theoretically) allowed seat selections directly on the...

China Airlines reward seats using Qantas points

When I booked reward seats, seat selection did not become available for around 24 hours. If you have only booked today, perhaps try again tomorrow?

China Airlines reward seats using Qantas points

A cash ticket booked as a codeshare? As far as I can see seat selection is available for economy passengers on China Airlines (for a fee), so it does seem surprising you cannot do so.

China Airlines reward seats using Qantas points

Perhaps you can clarify which class your booking is, and confirm it was a reward booking? I have a classic reward booked for September (in J) which I booked last September. Seats were available for me to select on the China Airlines site within 24 hours (and I could see seat selection on the...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

We too really loved the cheetah. It’s probably the level of action and sometimes interaction you get. And they are super pretty too sometimes, to be frank, the lions can look a mangy.

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

A full day today in the Ndutu/southern Serengeti region. And what a day it was. It started with a sighting of a solo cheetah on the hunt a mere few hundred metres from our camp. We waited patiently for some time but the cheetah, who was observing a herd of impala, did not seem ready to make a...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Today we were heading out of central Serengeti to the Ndutu/southern Serengeti region. Before leaving we spent a little more time in the central region, and we were lucky to again be the first to spot a lion pride, which gave us a little more quiet time with the pride. This pride had a number of...

Japanuary 2024 - the trip that nearly wasn't

I am not a skier but I can see why Aussie skiers head to Japan. Better value, better snow, better food

That’s a shame, as I imagine you could not actually see the lion cubs?

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Our next day was a full day in the Serengeti, long enough to head a little away from the high traffic areas, although our first stop was the visitors centre, built around a kopje (rock formation), with an interesting walk and some sculptures. Then it was off for a long drive, full of the...

Thanks. Next installment coming up momentarily which I think has some pretty cool photos .

Cash or Card? Countries where you still need cash.

We used our Bankwest M/C debit card in Japan last April. We used it almost exclusively in 7/11 ATMs but sometimes Japanpost. There were no fees from Bankwest and I don’t recall fees from the 7/11 atm. If there were fees they must have been relatively low (similar to here), so they did not make...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

After our two days in the lesser known Tarangire our next destination was the exceptionally well known Serengeti National Park. On the way we had arranged a stop at the Olduvai Gorge Museum. Olduvai Gorge is an active archaelogical site, famous as the location of the discovery of many early...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Thanks. All the animal shots I have posted are with a new (to me) camera that I am just getting the hang of. Bought a new lens as well that I was really happy with.

The next day we were back to Tarangire for a full day’s game drive. As we were staying fairly close it was fairly quiet when we arrived at the park. The park is divided by the Tarangire river. The only crossing at present is a weir, although a new bridge is currently under construction...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

As you have all no doubt worked out, I am back home and returned to the usual work commitments, slowing the pace of this trip report. But I am determined to complete it, so please stay with me if you can. So after our two days in Arusha, we have reached the start of our safari, and the last...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Although we have only ever done a safari in northern Tanzania (twice now), I agree it was our understanding that we would see substantially more animals in Tanzania than Kruger. To be honest we never really considered South Africa, partly because we really have just enjoyed travelling in...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

That could certainly explain why the independent budget travellers have apparently disappeared. Although we did still see plenty of people who were camping in Serengeti - it's cheaper than lodges or (permanent or semi-permanent) tented camps. I think Tanzania is still do-able on a budget. I also...
