    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

And so that was that. 6 amazing weeks that mostly went as planned. Not once did we have to run for a flight, although we did have to run for the ferry in Zanzibar. Of the long haul J class flights we had, I would Qatar's Q-suites slightly ahead of Emirates, even though Emirates has the Skybar...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Our flight from JNB to DOH was not Q-suites but still the more than acceptable herringbone style. ShelleyB-son took the window seat and enjoyed his solo-time. Food was excellent as was the service. Our flight times did not allow a stop in the lounge in DOH, but to be honest we were not really...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Our flight to JNB was with Airlink, an airline based in South Africa. We'd only booked in Y and it was very no frills indeed. I don't recall getting any food. It was only short haul but still, a little something would not have gone astray. We landed early in the morning and I had arranged an...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

Flighted landed on time in DAR where we transferred to the International terminal for our flight to JNB. Checkin opened on time although there was some confusion regarding our bags. Despite being very much underweight (the heaviest was 15kg), the check in staff would not accept them on the belt...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

And so we come to the long journey home. Our original plan was to fly home from Dar es Salaam using points with Emirates. We had J class seats booked from Dar to Singapore 10 months in advance but as the departure date approached no points seats (not even one!) became available. We were...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

The next day was, sadly, our final day in Tanzania. Our flight was scheduled to depart Kilimanjaro Airport at 2130 so we were able to get in almost a full day in Lake Manyara before we needed to head back to the airport. We had arranged to have a guided walking safari, which was enjoyable if...

    Sweden and Tanzania 23/24

After a long delay due to that darn work thing, have some time to finally finish this TR. So after out final day in Ndutu, we had an early start to the day to make it to Ngorongoro crater. As mentioned upthread when we passed through on the way to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro is a massive...

    eSims, what is your experience.

Yes indeed, and seems odd that Telstra would offer better prices to pre-paid customers. But in looking at the plans seems one solution would be to migrate the post-paid Telstra number to an eSim (assuming you have not already) and have a "casual" pre-paid Sim ($35 for 6 months) in order to take...

Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

I don't think rewards have different baggage allowances to whatever is the standard for the airline and class you are travelling in. 23kg and 1 piece is not unheard of for international flights in economy. Who was the flight with that caused the trouble? And what allowance did it state on your...

    Travelling hopefully to Basel

We flew BA Dubai to London last December on the step over variety. Very odd. Agree that it was a big step forward at the time but really tired now.

    Neck Pillows

I have recently purchased a Trtl which I thought was fabulous, actually got some sleep in Y. They come in kids but it was a bit hit and miss with ShelleyB-son. He was great on one flight, could not get comfortable on the other. They also do not pack flat, they are basically a curve. Still packs...

    Your Oldest Travel Accessory

A leather passport holder/travel wallet embossed with my initials that was given to me when I went backpacking in Africa in 1997. Still looks as good as new and I still use it every trip.

Return to the Japan Alps May 2024

When I heard the name "hut" I imagined huts like on the Overland Track.

Return to the Japan Alps May 2024

Here is what is amusingly called a "hut". We plan to have a ramen lunch then head back to the ropeway: https://thejapanalps.com/en/mountain-hut/nishihosanso/

Return to the Japan Alps May 2024

We're not doing the entire hike to Nishi-Hotakadake or beyond. It's 60-90 minutes to the mountain hut, which is not really a hut but actually a hotel. The section from the top station of the ropeway to Nishiho is a moderate walk (prob around grade 2 or 3). And yes we do hike a bit.

Return to the Japan Alps May 2024

Thanks but we really prefer public transport. The Nohi bus pass goes exactly where we want, and you can't park at Kamikochi anyway (no cars allowed).

Return to the Japan Alps May 2024

Day trip to Kamikochi. We are basing ourselves in Takayama (hotel already booked; 3 nights) then get the area pass from Nohi bus to get around the region. We also want to ride the Shin-Hotaka ropeway, and walk to the Nishiho mountain hut. From there we could walk down to Kamikochi but I think...

    Your longest trip point-to-point?

Back in the very distant past when I was a uni student I travelled to the UK to meet Mr ShelleyB’s parents. I flew on the cheapest ticket the student travel agency could find me. It was Philippine Airlines and I went MEL-MNL-AUH-FRA-LGW. I think it was scheduled to take about 40 hours but with...

Buying Qantas top-up points with a bonus: Worth it?

I just bought some, as it put me over the line for points club plus and the free Qantas Club membership which is a nice perk when flying economy domestically
