Best Airline for Frequent Travel in Australia (split thread)

Could the moderators split this thread again into a new topic under the heading :- "Best Airline for Frequent travel in Austrlia if you can spend every day looking for bargains 6 months ahead and want to justify your airline choice (split thread)" Or am I being a tad too facetious...

Best Airline for Frequent Travel in Australia (split thread)

People like to justify their choice with selective facts - that's perfectly normal. I for example could state that if you wanted to fly from Sydney to Melbourne next week for business (depart between 6am to 7:30am and return from 6pm to 7:30pm) then by choosing Virgin over Qantas you would save...

Is it the job of airport security to weigh passenger's cabin baggage?

What is hard for me to understand is why I am still reading this thread. But back on topic :- Yes. Why? :- Because they can ... Is it a perfect solution? :- No. But there are flaws in the process no matter where you do it so why not give it to the gorillas?

Air NZ mulls 15% share of Virgin Blue

Some interesting reading material on Wiki Ansett was dead man walking for quite some time, but it is always helpful to blame someone else - particularly if they are foreign. On the whole none of the major players (including both governments) comes out of the fiasco smelling of roses, but...

    Qantas Fare Increase - 28 July 2010

That's the point. You can't afford an X5 so you drive a cheaper model. There are probably about 20 different cars of the same ilk (if you go right down to the "soft-roaders") that you can buy. There is healthy competition in the car industry and choices abound. Unfortunately the same can't...

platinum - thrown out of galleries first at heathrow, waiting for explanation

So because it happened to someone who doesn't dress as smartly as you then it is OK? How about if a Dragon came up to you in a lounge (any lounge) and said "Sorry - you don't look like the sort of person we want here, so we have unilaterally downgraded your published rights. Please push off...

    Qantas Fare Increase - 28 July 2010

I tried putting Sydney to Edinburgh into the booking engines of all of the above but was stymied by the fact that they don't fly there. V Oz could get me to London (via Melbourne and Johannesburg) and then back (via LA and Brisbane) for $6700. Well that's an improvement! Did you read my...

    Qantas Fare Increase - 28 July 2010

Cool. So if you don't mind could you please send me a cheque for $100 to cover my fare increase because apparently you (or your employer) won't notice it. I, on the other hand, do.

platinum - thrown out of galleries first at heathrow, waiting for explanation

It's a class system, pure and simple. If you don't like elitism and discrimination (mixed in with a healthy dose of misplaced superiority) then don't use airline lounges - particularly the BA Heathrow ones. But I would be going in very very hard at Qantas and would give the tabloids and their...

    Qantas Fare Increase - 28 July 2010

It may have escaped your notice (or maybe you are a teenager) but the government owned Qantas from 1947 to 1993. The reference to BHP and Rio was regards their shareholders, who apparently are far more important people than the public (or the Prime Minister for that matter). I was just lumping...

    Mumbai airport quick hotel stop

I've stayed at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai which is very nice and probably as quick to walk to as get a taxi from the International Terminal. Paid about 8000 rupees a night so not cheap, and I doubt they do an hourly or half-day rate but you could call them and ask.

Emirates to Europe in December - buy now or wait ?

I have just put a deposit down on a QF/BA trip to Edinburgh via Hong Kong. Close to $3.5K due to specific flights being requested to match award booking. Theoretically if Qantas happen to have a Christmas sale later I could cancel the booking with Q Hols and pay the penalty - with the credit...

    Qantas Fare Increase - 28 July 2010

I live in Sydney and travel a bit. Mostly domestic but with a smattering of international travel (NZ, US, SEA). If I want to cobble together status credits and FF points there is only one sensible option - Qantas. So they get 90% of my business and I get to book some award tickets to the UK...

QF crew in J cabin - how appropriate?

I've learnt lots of things on this thread. Deadheading crew have access to Business Class if available. They are supposed to defer to paying passengers as regards meal choices. The above does not always happen. <redacted> Come to think of it that's not a lot of useful knowledge considering...

Any Oz to UK fare sales at Christmas?

If I could bring the conversation back on topic and reiterate a few points. 1. I have no choice of dates 2. I have no choice of airlines 3. I can only choose when to buy the airfare (and I suppose who to buy it through) I was hoping for some insider knowledge about fare movements in the...

Any Oz to UK fare sales at Christmas?

I agree with you all - it is both a rip-off and a consequence of market factors. I was not trying to get a lynch-mob together, just curious as to whether playing "chicken" with BA/QF was likely to end in tears or not. I have no choice of carriers or dates due to the fact that I am sync'ing in...

Any Oz to UK fare sales at Christmas?

It's been a while since I booked a UK fare at peak times and I may be too optimistic about the impact of the GFC, but I am shocked at the quote I got for a QF/BA ticket to EDI. $3360 for the cheapest economy fare seems steep - even for mid December - and I have been hanging out for some real...

Hertz #1 / QFF Pricing in the US

Hertz pricing totally baffles me. I have just got a quote from Qantas Holidays for a UK flight plus car hire. The price of an Intermediate (D) manual for 16 days over Christmas was $772 (~445 Sterling). Just to compare I jumped on the Hertz UK site and got a quote for .... 906 ...
