I too am wary of the boards but have not yet been let down by the announcements. If I'm worried that they aren't updating properly I often google the flight number - the online tracking sites seem to be quicker to show updated departure times.

Try mobile check-in at T-48 h (I've been able to select seats in row 4 this way), or based on recent posts above online check-in might now also allow you into those seats. Failing that yes ask at the airport, or even try kiosk check-in (last I heard this even lets reds and silvers move forward).

Any possibility that people with relatively-difficult-to-pronounce surnames get fewer welcomes? Maybe they feel it's more polite to not try unless they're 100% sure of the pronunciation. And from my experience I'd say there was a period of a few months last year where personalised welcomes...

Just made a booking for gold+red, was able to select from the gold allocation, but after payment "Seat selection cannot be confirmed for some/all guests. Seats will be assigned upon check in." Haven't seen that one before. Seats listed as N/A. Hmm.

I've seen feverish grabbing of mini wine bottles from the cart on a QF flight, squirreled away along their row and put into bags. The flight attendants were bemused by the eagerness.

Very interesting, for tonight's flight, OLCI still showed nothing forward of row 7. But mobile check-in showed several seats available in rows 4-6! So at the moment it looks like golds should use their mobile if they want a wider range of seats without having to ask at the airport.

Mine didn't improve at T-24, so maybe the front 24 seats really were all full at T-48, or choosing at time of booking limits your later choices, or the increased availability mentioned above is only for bookings made more recently than mine.

For me, it's the "Show detail" link at the top right of the "Upgrade to Platinum" box. Sadly I don't know what it looks like for platinums ;)

And yet for a flight this Saturday OLCI won't give me (gold) further forward than row 7. Interesting contrast with swanning_it's and tickthelist's posts above - maybe difference is I chose seats when I booked a few weeks ago? Will try again at T-24.

I've had multiple dockets at SYD. Last time I was at a new SYD gate my phone was sufficient for boarding - maybe the new gates don't have docket printers?

Maybe just 61 rather than +61? They might have set up the form to only accept numerals. Last time I used mobile check-in it certainly accepted 04xx_xx_XX and I don't recall a spot for country code.
