It's a tough one, manufactured spending is much more of a thing in US so all card issuers drill into them in much more detail than Australia. For example, they will claw back sign up bonuses if you go to Walmart in US and buy a bunch of gift cards, and they will demand to see your Walmart...

This is definitely not a cash advance. Never has been. Ive purchased more than 50K of gift cards within the last 3 years and I've never seen a gift card purchase treated as a cash advance. So I'm not sure how you can use the word 'often'.
