Gulf Air Manila to Europe R/T in Business - Approx $1925 (AUD)

Very good fare (IMO) for those interested in travelling to Europe in Business Class via SE Asia. Noticed it on FT: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/premium-fare-deals/2195551-gf-mnl-mxp-others-business-1-238-a.html

    Careful around DB (Deutsche Bahn)

Not great news if you're travelling any time soon. But not much worse than Great British Railways...

Should you Renew your UK passport?

And Rome FCO. I know from experience.

    Saudi Arabia and Saudi Airlines

I wouldn't get too excited about it. It's not a deal maker (the religious police will be watching you...). If I wanted a drink I'd go elsewhere, as in another country (or even to the Australian embassy in Riyadh - ask me how I know).

Bankwest Qantas Transaction account [being withdrawn in 2025]

Yes, absolutely. I opened this account mainly because of the favourable foreign currency conversion rates, but as Bankwest declines many of my foreign currency transactions because of its hypersensitivity to possible fraud, I find it quite difficult to use. So I mainly use Wise for these...

    Qantas' New A321XLR

That's not saying a lot. Surely biz should be a bit nicer than it is for the $$$$ they charge. But, oh wait!

    Careful around DB (Deutsche Bahn)

I know what you mean. I booked a R/T Ljubljana - Klagenfurt trip with OeBB for next month on a Sunday, and have since discovered that there will be trackwork between Ljubljana and Jesenice that day. So it looks like part of my trip will be by bus (if I'm lucky). I guess you just have to suck it...

Article: The Car Rental Industry is Ripe for Reform

This is all very interesting, but some of the comments above need to be tested when an irregularity actually occurs. You know what I'm, saying. As I've mentioned previously, I always take out the Hertz Max Damage Waiver, as it gives me peace of mind. To me that's worth a lot, but to others...

Should you Renew your UK passport?

Not to mention Turkey, EUR 50 for Australians, zero for UK passport holders. I know from bitter experience, when I had lost my UK passport en route and only had my AU passport to enter the country (but that's another story). And, as the UK passport is so much cheaper than the ripoff Australian...

Jetstar to exit HTI October 2025

That might be a little extreme. Suirely, if your life depended on it....

    Qantas' New A321XLR

We all need to be careful what we wish for. If the A321 is anything like the 220, it won't be nice. Very restricted room between seats in both J and Y. At least that's my experience, and Qantas isn't going to make it any better.

Transit through US a good idea or not?

I think I've said this before, but I have no intention of going there ever again, even though I'm a UA 2MM (*G for life). The USA has made its decision to treat all foreigners badly, so I'm reacting to that. And my wife thinks I'm being too weak about it.

Transit through US a good idea or not?

I wouln't do it either, even though I'm a United 2 million miler. Not worth the potential hassle or your peace of mind, even though it probably wouldn't end up as being anything more than just rather lengthy and annoying. But you know the risks...

    Made any travel mistakes lately?

Yes, I know all about that, staying at hotels at motorway services. You are bombarded with signs both outside and inside, so it's hard to miss, and when you get to reception you are usually asked if you've registered your car on the system.

    Made any travel mistakes lately?

Is that legal? I also live in the ACT and have lived in Vic and have done the same thing (and I know in my case it wasn't).

Article: The Car Rental Industry is Ripe for Reform

I always rent from Hertz, due to my (ex) employers discount, and I always take out max insurance (well now at least, perhaps not always previously). Now I never receive even a cursory check when returning, so money well spent. However, in previous times, I did have a rather unpleasant...

UK rolling out Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

It would be interesting if you tried to do it at LGW then. Also, I couldn't imagine that MAN could do it seamlessly either (and I wouldn't try it).

Article: Public Servants Spent $1 Million More on Flights During Double Qantas Status Credits

Just as well I retired from the Public Service (and everywhere else, in 2000). But before that, travel arrangements and reimbursement were much more civilised.

Qantas Classic Reward & Upgrade Devaluation on 5 August 2025

I think I'll just make a speculative booking AU - SE Asia R/T in J for next March and then try and find a good fare to Europe in J from there. Worst comes to the worst, I'll just cancel for a refund, minus the 6,000 pts, which by then will have been significantly devalued. Yes, I know that...
