    A week in China - Where/What?

We paid in CNY. The fare is between Shenzhenbei and HK W Kowloon was about CNY 69 (CNY 120 for First Class) and the booking fee was CNY 20 per person. There was some sort of instant voucher available when I booked using the Trip.com app which gave a tiny discount. CNY 20 is about GBP 2-3 as...

    A week in China - Where/What?

I was thinking of just fronting up to the ticket window for tickets for Dad and I from Shenzhenbei to HK W Kowloon, but in the end I booked a specific train on Trip.com and copped the booking fee, which wasn't as stark a proportion as @Flashback 's ticket just upthread. Especially when Dad...

    A week in China - Where/What?

New thing that really annoyed my Dad. We are in Shenzhen and just spent the morning in Huaqiangbei, the mecca for electronics. There are sooooo many people on mopeds and the like, many for Meituan or deliveries. Most of Huaqiangbei is walking mall... most. Some is combined walking and moped...

    eSims, what is your experience.

I guess that raises a good (maybe not so good) point. Modern phones may support storing many eSIMs at a time, but it seems for now you can only have two active at the same time?

    eSims, what is your experience.

...and this came to bite me (slightly) in the butt. I am in China right now and took the plunge for an Holafly eSIM, giving me unlimited data (but no number) for the duration of my short trip. It works great, but of course I conveniently forgot about my phone being unable to run more than one...

China - never a dull moment!

For me, it's probably sustaining my older phone throughout an entire day without having to return to the hotel to recharge. My phone consumes quite a bit between camera (incl video), games and mobile data, plus an older Samsung trying to run OneUI 7 is a bit flogging. Most of them are bar...

    A week in China - Where/What?

Talk about paying for things in China.... Between Alipay/WeChat and cash? Sorry cash kings, but Alipay/WeChat is much more common. Vendors, I believe, are bound by law to accept cash payment at all times, but that doesn't mean they can't make life hard for you. For example, some vendors may not...

    A week in China - Where/What?

A few examples of semi or fully contrary behaviour. We visited the Terracotta Warrior Museum and Tomb of Qinshihuang today. Naturally there are lots and lots of people, primarily because it's Chinese summer holidays and said attraction is extremely popular - the fact it's mid-week and blazing...

China - never a dull moment!

We're going to train it to Shenzhen tomorrow, where Dad promises it is an electronics mecca. For powerbanks, is there a recommended brand to look for? People say Xiaomi is a good brand in terms of balance between reputation, global recognition, price and apparently the efficiency of their...

Qantas Business Class meals & menus

I thought, if I remember correctly, Tommy was one of the bar staff in the Singapore lounge. There was some sort of feature done on him.

Article: Qantas Considers Bringing Call Centres Back to Australia

The comment I made was more directly about the recent data breach and several were implying that had the data been hosted here in Australia then there would have been less to no chance the breach would have occurred, since it was determined that an employee or contractor was the weakest link...

Qantas Business Class meals & menus

I'd actually favour the polenta, which sounds delicious, but it doesn't have any meat. If the cabin wasn't full, I'd humbly ask for either the chicken or beef, but just that protein served with the polenta.

    A week in China - Where/What?

If you hadn't realised yet... ...the concept of queuing is still fairly foreign in China. Of course a lot of it is due to there being so many people, but there is little concept of personal space and pushing in line still occurs (despite lots of staff yelling, "form a line!"). In practice...

    Business Lounge - Under 18's

I remember being 15 years old (a very, very long time ago!) and my dad got me an award ticket on QF Business Class (when QF still had the 747SP, and I got an upper deck seat, which I think might have been a Dreamtime product). Dad couldn't help me check in at MNL (usual non-passengers not...

Airlines where you can't charge a device, or are restricted

I can't remember the script from the older or newer videos, but I distinctly remember that you can't smoke (use) e-cigarettes, but there was nothing mentioned about charging them? I can't see how it would be reasonable to allow them to be charged anyway.... Oddly enough, some of the new rules...

Airlines where you can't charge a device, or are restricted

Based only on my recent experience of not being pulled up about it, CX allows an exception for power banks to be used with medical equipment (CPAP). However, it (the medical device and how it is powered) must be declared to and approved by CX at least 48 hours prior to departure.
