I’ll always be conservative in the take off figures. So even if there’s a 30kt headwind I’ll account for nil wind. Any kind of cross wind and I’ll account for 5kts tailwind. And if there already is a tailwind component I’ll go to the full 10kts. Especially with a place like Melbourne when they...

A few different scenarios come to mind. 1. They went to the wrong holding point. 2. They were ready but something in the cabin meant they were no longer ready so moved them out of the way. 3. Conditions changed so they needed to rerun the figures and then required the full length.

There are no height restrictions for commercial pilots in Australia. You may need a cushion for flight training in some of the single engine propeller aircraft but the modern jet aircraft all have adjustable seats and rudder pedals so you can reach the controls. Some of our smaller pilots still...

Yes mostly cost for the airline and the airport themselves. Lots of maintenance at the airport with regard to keeping the ILS operational plus all of the associated lighting. Cost for the airline to keep crew trained in the simulator and the aircraft themselves being able to conduct the...

For the majority of flights, not really. Most aircraft can take up to 10 or 15kts tailwind. I suspect there will be a few operators out there who would "operationally require" the most into wind runway and they are quite within their rights to do so. ATC will have no other choice but to grant...

It's the same accuracy. It just receives a lot less interference from other aircraft as it's GPS based and cheaper for airports because one transmitter can sit in the middle of the airfield and have a GLS approach to all runways. Also, once you're within 23nm from the runway, you can use the...

You’re right. I double checked and turns out we’re approved for all runways at MEL for autoland. RVR must be >125m on 16/27/34 and >350m on 09.

Disinfectant Spray on arrival at SYD

There are three types of disinsection methods that are used to spray an aircraft on international flights. 1. Residual is carried out while no passengers are on board. The entire aircraft is sprayed with a residual insecticide that lasts eight weeks. 2. Pre-embarkation is carried out while no...

Because runway 16 is the only runway capable of an autoland. Even then some aircraft/crew aren’t capable of conducting a low Vis approach. Again, there is a GLS available on every runway (but ILS on 16/27 only) but not every aircraft has the equipment on board for a GLS approach. This...

My initial thoughts are that the rotation was started way too early. It must have been picked up and hence the nose drop again. Perhaps TOGA was then pushed and that's what created the steep climb once the aircraft got airborne. It could also have meant incorrect speeds were input into the FMC.

The profile itself doesn’t call for anything too bad. There’s a TCAS event on climb out of Sydney followed by an ice crystal icing event leading to an engine failure in cruise. So I’ll have about 15mins to get my bearings again before the rest of the box ticking exercises come.

Next week actually. It’s my standard cyclic which is in the MAX sim. First time “flying it” since the differences course I did a couple of years ago. So a bit of study required to go through all that again.

I’m certain it happens more often than we’re notified up the front. I haven’t been directly contacted saying it’s a problem. Probably because there’s different flavours and the toilets now smell of strawberries.

We will know our gate prior to top of decent. We’ll make contact with the company that will give us a gate on arrival (still subject to change). After landing and while vacating the runway we will transfer over to the ground frequency. On initial contact to ground I’ll give the gate number as...

    Is Aussie ATC too slow?

Unfortunately the weather around Melbourne last night didn't help. Aircraft in front of us wanted a good 30sec to 1min in the lined up position to "check the radar". This put us on the back foot as well with only 4 aircraft in front and took us 25mins to get airborne and we still had to go to...

With the conditions in MEL earlier today they were using runway 34 only. The aircraft would have had a feeder fix time to meet at waypoint WAREN for the WAREN7A arrival. Given the short sector length it would be hard to lose a lot of time en-route. This explains the big dog leg towards Toora...

Definitely understand that. It really is just a planning exercise to be able to plan non EDTO. I would be satisfied to stand in front of a court and defend why I overflew and considered Forrest unsuitable. In my mind unless I was on fire, or had an explosive depressurisation with severe injuries...

Definitely an interesting decision! Having said that, on pretty much every transcon we are planned non EDTO (extended ops). The reason being is they use Forrest as a suitable diversion airport. Now if I was to have an engine failure right over the top, even though Forrest would technically be...

And if you’re part of the Qantas group then it’s ALL external lights on including the wing inspection lights during the day and night. Something I’ve never understood. (Tongue in cheek). Logo lights come on during night ops only and when power to the aircraft is available and will go off at...

Basic landing rules being company policy then yes, there are "rules". Our SOP is to nominate the latest point of touchdown being the first third of the runway. Outside that, and you go around. While it might seem like runway length may not matter (34L at SYD), all of our stopping solution and...
