Incorrect information you've been given by Qantas Contact Centre

Nope. They require it because it removes opportunities for manufactured spending and for fraud. Yes, that is what the rule is really to stop. Or just repeatedly purchase refundable tickets on a points-earning card and refund them to a non-points card/debit card/etc.

    Bangkok Taxi Scam

Grab is great. You might get a taxi through them anyhow, but with knowledge of the fare and having it charged on your credit card instead of having to mess about with cash.

    Qantas partnership with BP

It will be interesting to see how this new plan works and whether it's worthwhile. I drive little and have a big tank, so the "collect up to 500 bonus points when you fill up at BP" offers for VA were fantastic. I probably averaged over 10x as much in bonus points as per litre points, which is...

    AMEX travel disappointments

Yes, it's a massive disappointment. The free airfare on the Platinum Edge card used to be fantastic. Degrading it to a $200 travel credit was bad enough, but the value is almost never there. The first thing I do each year when the credit becomes available is try to work out if there is any way...

    International Driving Permits/Licences

If you can't find a single example of your assertion, then you are the one being irrational. Also, nothing emotional about my response either. I just wish threads wouldn't get cluttered with your kind of vague, worthless post is all.

    International Driving Permits/Licences

Yes. Do you have anything sensible to add?

    International Driving Permits/Licences

Without a list of which states those are and/or links to the specific rules, I would categorise that as unsubstantiated rubbish. Most likely, the federal government, which has no requirements in this area, is leaving the possibility open that some state might, even though there are no actual...

    International Driving Permits/Licences

When people are discussing whether there is a list of which states might require one, a suggestion to go look up every state's requirements individually is pretty much the opposite of useful.

JQ begins selling MEL-BQB (Busselton WA)

That's what I was wondering. Margaret River was easily the worst tourist trap I've ever been to within Australia. Accommodation , food and wine all double the price of comparable quality offerings in the Barossa or Hunter. And then you ask some wineries if they have any fortified wines and they...

    Complexity of transiting through HKG?

I know someone who made the transit recently. Totally fine. Check-in was blockaded that day, so the only passengers on the flight to Europe were transit passengers. (Totally sucks for Cathay, but a bonus for the passengers.)

Gasp... Spend $150 at Coles for 9000 FB bonus points!

I thought it was just me, because I'd not visited for a couple of months. 2000 for $70 stacked with a 750 for $60 coupon and some 10x and 50x product bonuses totalled around 3600. The receipt gave me another 1000 offer for a few days. I've not had one like that from the register before.

    ACCC slams loyalty schemes

I agree with the AFF response article, except for one detail about carrier surcharges: "We accept that these charges exist, however, more transparency about the existence and amount of these carrier charges is required." These charges started off as fuel surcharges after massive fuel price...

    SMS Login Verification - Argh

I know. The comment I was replying to was talking about "build TOTP functionality into the Qantas app itself".

    Beware of DCC in Europe

If you convert $50 to THB, the 220THB ATM fee comes to 20.2%. If you're prepared to swallow that ludicrous fee, why care about possible DCC being added to it? The banks apparently take the same attitude: If you're prepared to pay the ATM charge, they might as well skim some more off you. As...

    SMS Login Verification - Argh

That's a wild assumption. I have logins on over 500 web sites. I have no desire to download hundreds of apps in order to be able to use them. You get issues with updates, whether they work on your particular phone, whether they drain the battery by being badly behaved, the tracking done by...

    Beware of DCC in Europe

Generally 3% on Australian cards. And that is why they do it! The threshold for "not enough to go through the chargeback hassle" needs to be under 10c to stop these thieves. There is one way to stop DCC. Use Amex. Then be super vigilant at any place that doesn't accept Amex.

Time needed for transfer at LAX?

Do you feel lucky and are you fast? And are you in economy? There are a pile of flights just from Australia that arrive at TBIT between 6 and 6:30am. (QF, DL, VA and AA from SYD, QF from MEL, QF from BNE.) Last time I arrived on one of those, nobody was allowed to disembark any of those...

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

i.e. They would have dealt with it if my BR flight was out of BKK. Otherwise, their position was for me to speak to ground staff meeting my TG flight at ICN.

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

As I said, they refused to do anything until I arrived at ICN. From there, the only other direct flight to KHH was CI, which was (by then) fully booked.

Avianca Life Miles - post your SUCCESSFUL award bookings here

Mine wasn't handled as nicely. With my LM award, HKT-BKK-ICN-KHH (TG/TG/BR), BR sent me a text message advising of their cancellation after I'd already checked in for the flights. They didn't call. I spoke to BR staff at BKK and they refused to do anything unless it was an ex-BKK flight. There...
